Into the Wild with Bagheera’s camp!!

Address– Kameshwarjee Road, Raghunathpura 306126, India

How to get there: It is about 160 km long ride from Udaipur by road.

The name Bagheera has mainly become known because of the popular Indian children story ‘Jungle book’ but Bagheera is actually a South Asian name for Leopards.  Bagheera’s camp is a semi-arid wildlife camp homestay. Operated by the community itself, it preserves the flora and fauna of the place that was previously decimated and overgrazed. The place is at the same distance from Udaipur as from Jodhpur and is perfect for travelers wanting to have an authentic Rajasthan cultural, rural and local experience in the wildlife. An eco holiday for lovers of nature experiencing it in the rawest and authentic form but in a safe and healthy way.

Room: Though there were a few luxurious tents (as much luxury as you can get in the total wild) as well, we chose to stay in a room. The suite we were given was lovely but got too hot because of limited A/C. it was okay to handle since we spent most of the time wandering out or in the Verandah anyway. The scenery of Aravalli hills was beautiful. Though the room was pretty basic in facilities, we spent most of our time on safari and exploring outdoors. And it’s not like anyone would visit the place to live in luxury, we went to experience the wild and that we got.

Camp Site: There are no fences or anything by the campsite, just huge granite rocks to protect from harsh winds. There is a playground right near the site and we played volleyball there and walked barefoot on mud, looking at the bamboo plantations. The money that they earn from travelers staying here is used to maintain the Leopard reserve and so you know you’re helping a good cause. It was so refreshing to meet Princess Padmaja and her team who cared so much about the environment. It is asked of the people to be responsible and recycle waste instead of throwing it.

Food and hospitality: The food prepared is all from Ayurvedic ingredients, totally organic and we sat with the cook while it was being cooked, taking in the aroma as well as learning the tricks. The food is completely vegetarian and plentiful and the whole experience of eating under the stars is inexplicably pleasing. Oh, and we had the best cup of tea, ever. The whole staff which mainly consists of local tribesmen and villagers including the cook was very warm and took such good care of us that we didn’t feel like leaving the place. They treated us more like family than paying guests.

What to do there:

There is a Jodhpur Hunting style Camping Safari that led us into the wild. They took us out in jeeps at dusk and we spotted leopards along with a leopardess with two cubs. It was such a magnificent sight.  In the short safari that we had, we saw birds, desert fox, and crocodiles as well. Since we were more interested in bird watching, Princess Padmaja, our hostess stayed with us for hours enjoying the view.  We were also invited to a local village and saw the special sunrise celebration at a local temple nearby. That had to be the highlight of the whole trip, a real memorable view.

Highlights: The tribal people with their fascinating knowledge and talks, along with their livestock would have to be the highlight of our stay at Bagheera’s. While the wildlife provided the necessary thrill, the bonfire and BBQ sessions gave us peace of mind and relaxation. Moreover, you can’t help but admire Princess Padmaja and her family’s efforts of protecting the place.

The overall experience of us staying at Bagheera’s camp was wonderful. The picturesque views, warm hospitality, fascinating shades of nature have made an unforgettable mark on our mind and it wouldn’t be possible without Bagheera’s camp. The stories we got to hear about the leopards and how the place came to be added to the experience all the more. This place has something for everyone, the thrill for an adventurer, the peace, and inspiration for a writer and the local cuisines that dance on taste buds for the foodie. We recommend it with all our heart. Write us at ghoomophirosisters@gmail.com for your bookings to this unexplored gem in Jawai.

Why Dhanak is a must watch for traveller in you?

Dhanak was a refreshing and vibrant movie that set the bar high for conventional Bollywood movies. The story of a blind boy Chotu and Pari, his sister who promised to help him regain his eyesight. She sees a poster of Shahrukh Khan and believes that he is the one who could help her in getting Chotu’s eyesight back. It is an incredible road film and I believe everyone should watch it especially travellers because of following reasons:

1.    It is a road film

Both the kids skip their homes to go on a 300km long journey. There will some parts of the journey that every traveller would be able to relate to. Like the people they met on the way and how kind a stranger can be, even the homesickness but a wish to finally see what you want to.

2.    Add Rajasthan to your Travel list

The scenes of the desert of Jaisalmer will surely make you add Rajasthan to your list of places to visit. You get insight into the rural life of Rajasthan as well and it is way more charming than you expect. It just wins your heart with the hospitality and the people. From the first sequence itself, sleeping under the night sky in the open desert, you understand that it will be a special experience.

3.    Life lesson

Apart from these superficial reasons, there is one deep meaning behind this movie. It shows you that you must see things with your heart and not just your eyes and that is an important lesson for one who travels. While travelling, we see incredible sights of majestic mountains, spectacular oceans and what not. But it is not just the sight that changes you as a person, it is that moment where you understand the grandiosity of nature and revel in its magnificence.

4.    Anything is possible

I know how hard it is for travellers to firstly make that choice of choosing life on the road. It is a big risk and while the will is there, there are always doubts. But this movie and the kid duo in all its innocence taught us that anything can be achieved if only one has faith. The lesson to learn is that we must believe in ourselves and our ideas. If you wish to take on the most difficult trek or climb a mountain, nothing can stop you.

5.    People you meet

The movie gives you an authentic portrayal of the types of people you will during your journey. There is the truck driver who gives the kids a ride, the man in the tractor and as a traveller; we have had such nice experiences where a stranger lends a helpful hand. They also meet a foreigner which is also expected and a Banjara woman who rescues the kids from kidnappers. Now that does add thrill to the journey.

6.    Missed the bus for food

Okay, this HAS to have happened with every traveller at least once. You get easily distracted by delicious food and local cuisines and miss the train or bus. And for certain food lovers, the problem of finding the right place with authentic and delicious regional food is real. So when you find it, there is no stopping that feast.

All in all, it is not only an inspiring movie but also a visual delight with scenes of peacock cries and real colors of Rajasthan. Even the music of the movie is incredibly charming and heart touching. As a traveller, you should note down the names of villages and pay them a visit at your trip to Rajasthan.

In Conversation with Padmaja Rathore

There are rare times when you come across some rare people who are not only an inspiration to you, but you always feel that their story needs to be told to everyone. And exactly this is what I felt when I met miss Padamaja Rathore from Jodhpur. She has been kind enough to share her story with us in the most candid way and here is the glimpse from the conversation.

Brief us about your background?

Rajkumari (Princess) Padmaja of Jodhpur who is filled compassion and courage has left the comforts of her Palace and has taken it as her duty to protect, educate and guide the people and wildlife of her states eastern frontier, the wild of Jawai and Bera.

Born in the Royal House of Jodhpur Marwar, Maharaj R.K Rajendra Singh is a conservation aficionado who for 45 years done various deeds in Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Uttrakhand. He is a trained forest firefighter, has been a part of several volunteer activities with the Indian Air force and has done surveys the Indian Government- the Great Indian Bustard conservation, Blackbuck protection, CITIES, WWF, flood-affected areas, afforestation, water conservation and the list continues.

Rani Durgeshnandini Singh is from Himachal Pradesh, she has in silence helped several women in Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan with domestic violence and social abuse, hygiene and sanitation, birth control and volunteer education.

Baiji Lal Rajkumari Padmaja and Rudhrani are following the footsteps of their great-grandfather and parents, both are involved in the conservation of Flora, Fauna, culture, and education in Godwar, Rajasthan.

Princess Padmaja is a Taj product after completing her B.Sc honors in Business and Hotel Administration she has devoted her several years in the wilderness of Godwar Belt of the Aravalli Ranger with the Tribal folk, her compassionate nature has made her leave the luxury of Rai-Ka Bagh Palace Jodhpur and live the life of a common farmer.

Princess Padmaja is doing a private research on indigenous flora and conservation of wetlands for  fauna

Baiji Lal Rajkumari Rudhrani Singh Rathore is a young budding Lawyer, a keen traveler and is showing interest in social upliftment and conservation, she has a small Homestay in Manali and works with local people in that part of Himachal Pradesh.

Tell us about the support from family?

Family support is a blessing, they are strict and liberal at the same time with both of us ( my sister and),, they have demands and expectations, with deadlines we must meet. Their love and guidance are always with us. They have worked on making us emotionally and financially independent. We also work in the budget and have to give accounts back to the time. We owe every bit of knowledge and success to our family.

How did it all start?

Conservation started at a very young age, motivated by our family. They pushed us to be sensitive and responsible towards our planet. Giving us knowledge of plants and environment. We were made to pick up plastic and plant trees, we were taught how to respect all big and small creatures and human beings. We were made to address all our staff as Ji with respect. We very made to dig small catchment for water conservation, we were taught how to do farming and the rest is now reflecting in our Arid Recovery Wildlife and wetland project at Bagheera’s Camp.
Being into this for a while, how do you feel?
I  feel motivated and strong, working with tribals is very challenging and a slow process requires a long-term commitment towards them for they have trust issues. The positive part is that we all want our lands to become rich in indigenous flora and fauna so that the present and future generations can benefit. – we are all at Bagheera’s Camp working on
  • WETLAND CONSERVATION
  • ARID AND SEMI-ARID DECIMATED…
  • AYURVEDA
  • PROTECTION AND REVITALIZATION OF INDIGENOUS MEDICINAL PLANTS AND TREES
  • NATIVE SPECIES
  • LIVESTOCK GRAZING AND THE ASSOCIATED DIFFICULTIES

Your message to our readers?

My message and pursuit are simple – to bring an understanding and awareness to the importance of protecting our fragile and disappearing wild areas. Nature conservation and preservation is a key to our own survival as well as giving us natural areas that can be enjoyed and experienced.
let us all take action – every bit of what we do can help. Do not be a part of the group of people who wish to ignore these vital issues to our own health and the welfare and health of our families – GET INVOLVED – start a group amongst your friends and/or family to change the landscapes of your own garden and then to see where you can help your city and region become more eco friendly and aware.
YOU CAN ALSO START BY JUST NOT THROWING TRASH OR PLASTIC ANYMORE IN YOUR OWN NEIGHBORHOOD AND CITY – SAY NO TO PLASTIC BAGS – its an easy start.

Letter to Indian Parents: Let your daughters travel solo

Dear Indian Parent,

We all know the bond Indian parents have with their kids. Moreover, the way they keep their child a part of the family even after he has become self-reliant and starts a family of his own. That bond between a parent and a child is incomprehensibly strong but the second you told your daughter that she couldn’t go on that weekend trip with her friends, you broke her heart.

We understand you are being protective. The world is a big harsh place but if you don’t let your child go out into the world, face those hardships, travel across borders and see the kindness of strangers, you will be robbing them of the simple joys of life.I understand your mentality of having your kid get good grades, join a stable job, start a family but

We understand your mentality of having your kid get good grades, join a stable job, start a family but traveling is not a ‘luxury’ for the rich like it was before. Now, it is a necessity for the wandering soul. Today, the youth is more curious and hates to be confined. You could see the wanderlust in your child’s eye when they mention some far off place. And you can see the sadness too when you shoot down their hopes at ever being there.

Today, technology had made it too easy to stay in touch and the internet has made it convenient to know all you can about the place you visit. So, even with all these precautions, if you don’t let the apple of your eye, get on a bus with a backpack and go seek out the greater perhaps, then what is the point of all those years of education and nourishment?

Humans weren’t meant for routine and staying at the same place. In the heart of every one is a little spark of passion towards seeing the whole world and its wonders. And life is the greatest teacher imaginable.

When you send your daughter to go see the world, she will come back a more compassionate, self-reliant and gentle soul than when she left. Despite all the fears of uncertainty that one is thrown in the midst of in the start, most of us, we make it in the end. We adapt and adjust. You pamper your kids, indulge their every wish, teach them to be fair, strong and kind but don’t allow them the freedom to ever be that. How can they be with you always behind them, supporting them when they fall, correcting them when they go wrong?

Some lessons, one needs to learn on his own. And the world is so wide, its secrets vast and beautiful. Don’t you wish to let your child witness all of it, before they go back to the mundane routine and stability which is a cage from which there is no escaping?

Being a travel blogger myself, this is the one question that I have come across a lot. I am an Indian. How do I persuade my parents to let me travel? Even self-reliant independent people have asked this question which makes me wonder, what keeps them from just walking out of their families and just doing what they want anyway?

Love and respect.

So, shouldn’t you consider their feelings as well? Yes, they will have to take on many responsibilities and be careful. There will be times when they struggle but in the end, they will come back with a smile on their faces and lots of experience tagging behind them. Even you would be amazed at the stories they will have and the transformation that would have occurred. They will become everything you wanted them to be, and more.

So the next time your child asks you, “Can I go on this trip?”

Say yes.

Happy Travelling

Leh- Interesting Things not many people know

One of the most favorite tourist destinations in the entire country is Leh Ladakh. North Indians are fond of riding their heavy bikes up to this place; they come here for stargazing and to get lost amidst the natural beauty that lies here in abundance. The Himachal Pradesh transport ministry and Jammu and Kashmir also has special buses that will take you to Leh in a few hours. Cars and vans along with the bikes are also quite frequent here. One of the coldest places in the country is having some interesting things about that many people don’t know about. Let’s have a look at them.

Ladakh Leh is known as a high-altitude place surrounded by natural marvels. But a very know that this is also known as a very religious place. There are many festivals that take place here every year such as Hemis Festival, Dosmoche Festival, Losar Festival, Sindhu Darshan Festival, Ladakh Festival, and Tak-Tok Festival along with the Hindu festivals. The tourists must keep that in mind and should try to come here in the times of one of these festivals to experience them.

Buddhism happens to be the most dominant religion in the area and there are many Buddhist monks that reside in the nearby places, especially the monasteries. The tourists must take some time away from the calm and composed natural beauty to visit some monastery sometime. The monks are extremely friendly and it would make you see Buddhism in an entirely different light.

Bird watching is something many people don’t do when they make their trips here. The natural sceneries and landscapes bind them and the extreme cold doesn’t let them stay here long. There are about 250 different species of birds that can be found here in their entire natural habitat. And there are many chances for you to come across some rarest species of birds as well.

The high altitude zone that Leh is, this is a pure heaven for the ones studying the cosmos. Other than the stargazers, there are many astrology and astronomy centers in here. Among the said facilities are Infrared Telescope and the Indian Astronomical Observatory, Hanle

The very famous salt lake is one of the very few lakes in the world that are set up this high. The lake is located at about 4350 feet above the sea level which is another cool thing to know about it. So, next time you visit the place, keep in mind that you are gazing one amazing wonder of nature.

Jammu and Kashmir is going through turmoil nowadays. The tourism industry has gone down due to obvious reasons. But places like Leh and Ladakh are still here, away from all the dreaded happenings going on in the state. Leh is a paradise for the tourists and serves as a beautiful spot to be amazed about. The view of the great Himalayan range is mesmerizing from the high altitude.

Journey to the highest motorable Pass in the world is a feat in itself!

One of the most exotic places in India, Khardung La Pass is also regarded as the world’s highest point for motor vehicles. Wrapped in snow disguised as white gold, this picturesque destination is a gateway to scenic Shyok and Nubra valleys in the heart of Ladakh. Karakoram Range is around 40 km away from Leh.

Khardung La Pass offers you the majestic views of the valley and serpentine roads that tie up the mountain secretly. The snow-capped mountains, open lands, fragrant air, and lemony pastures with a tinge of green all make for a spectacular view. Khardung La is one of the most loved destinations especially those who love adventure sports and biking.

There is a reason behind why the Khardung La Pass was built. In order to solve the supply problem of the Turtok sector by the Shyok river which housed nearly 200 families and also to construct a road connecting Chalunka and Thoise, a motorable road through Khardung La was built. In 1973 the road was completed and opened for traffic.

Major Tourist Destination

Khardung La Pass is a hot favorite destination among tourists who love to explore nature on their bikes. The frenzy to travel across the region on a bike sometimes turns into a long nightmarish traffic jams on the pass. Hence, it is important to plan your travel in advance especially if you are travelling during peak season. Hence to facilitate traffic movement on the pass, vehicles from Leh to Khardung are allowed between 9 am and 1 pm while vehicles from Khardung to Leh are allowed between 1 pm and 5 pm. It is ideal to check the timings with the local agencies and taxi drivers.

The journey from Leh to Khardungla can be a challenging 3 hours drive up on a winding road, and you may find the road often jammed and interrupted by minor landslides and avalanches. Higher up, the mountains are densely covered with sheet of snow that melts slowly into slush of mud and there is very thin oxygen around. The roads are maintained by the army throughout the day.

Things to Remember

Around 24 kms of road from Leh to Khardung La Pass is made up of asphalt till the South Pullu check post. From the South Pullu check post to the North Pullu check post, the track is made up of gravel and dirt. A tourist is required to obtain Inner Line Permit (ILP) to cross the pass from the office of the District Commissioner. It is recommended that you keep around 7 to 8 copies of the permit as you will have to submit the copy with every check post to pass through.

Travelling Tips

  1. If you are travelling to Khardung La Pass you must come prepared for the worst weather. It can change from mild to extreme in no time and leave you stranded without basic facilities. During winters temperatures drop to -40 degrees Celsius and there is almost 10 feet of snowfall. One needs to be physically very strong to visit Khardung La Pass in winters. During the summer temperatures remain around 20 degrees Celsius but the freaky weather could turn worse anytime and you would be left shivering in the bitterly cold weather.
  2. Remember, there is no way you can find any accommodation on the pass. The best you can do is travel to Leh, the nearest city, to stay in a hotel or you can carry your tents along. You can pitch your tents on the roadside at Khardung La Pass.
  3. You can find good eatery and hotel options at Nubra valley as well. Do carry your food all through the journey. Some of the best places to stay near Nubra Valley are Hotel Karma Inn, Olgok Guest House, Jehlum Resort and Gupta Resorts.

Best time to visit

The best time to travel Khardung La Pass is between May and October. The pass is free and open during these seasons until weather plans something different. The road to Khardung La could be shut down due to a landslide and this could be a major blow to your plan. The weather up there is so unpredictable so come prepared.

The thrill of visiting the highest pass in the world will churn up your emotions. But it’s better to be safe than sorry and hence do not expose yourself too much and for too long at such high altitudes.
