Krishna Beach Resort finds a beautiful location at the picturesque Nagoa Beach amidst the beautiful trees spread across on the beach. It is one of the best resorts to experience an exotic beach vacation. We (ghoomophirosisters) checked‐in on time mentioned, that is, 12:00 p.m. while the Check‐out time is 11:00 a.m. that you need to be very particular about. Last but not least, booking a suite room will allow you access to both the splash pool and balcony. So, the choice is completely yours. All the categories of rooms offer you an inclusive breakfast. As soon as you check into the guest rooms you get free access to the Wi-Fi. The hot and cold water is available in the room taps 24 hours which was really a blessing for us (ghoomophirosisters).

Property amenities at the Resort

 The resort has a party plot with a swimming pool for guest use. We (ghoomophirosisters)  explored the Infinity Swimming Pool on the terrace that you can enjoy during the stunning sunrise and sunset along with the all-time available sea view. For those who have an extra craze towards fitness, there is also a gymnasium at the resort. You can also enjoy the premises a spa with massage and steam. Along with this, you get access to a doctor via phone call in case you need medical guidance. In case you are a big coffee fan that there is a popular Chulawala Coffee Shop within the resort that offers you fabulous coffee of all the types and there are also two types of restaurants in the resort.

There is much more to Bhubaneswar than old monuments, museums, and temples and though they may be the most captivating thing about the region, you can’t really miss out on some of the off-beat unexplored places after you have seen much of the popular spots. So here is a list of off-beat things to do for a unique trip to the Temple City.

  1. 360 view from atop the rock-cut caves

Climb atop the historic Udaygiri caves to revel in the marvelous 360-degree view of the city. While the climb itself is no short of a fitness test with steep steps carving a path to the top, the hike goes fine in the company of friends. But no need to fret even if you are going solo, just be warned of the monkeys on the path and remember not to open up a food packet lest it is snatched. But do carry a water bottle with you because the steep climb may make you thirsty at times. The best time to reach the caves would be afternoon so you can have ample time to take leisurely strolls and explore the place before making the climb when sunset comes close. Watch a picturesque view of the city from the top while also enjoying the relaxing view of the sunset.

  1. The largest thorny garden

To a commoner, cacti and succulents wouldn’t have much appeal but this huge garden of such prickly beauties could keep anyone intrigued for a while. The Regional Plant Resource Centre (RPRC) in Bhubaneswar has a collection of around 1,050 varieties of cacti which is the largest collection in Asia. Moreover, it has evolved 200 cacti with its research and development approach. This collection that keeps growing every day due to the efforts of the scientists at the center, is of great interest to people nationally and internationally in terms of research and study. RPRC has extended this love for Cacti and its expertise in the matter to create a Cactus House in the Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi.

The way it is growing, it is on the paths of becoming the largest Botanical Garden in Eastern India. While the main aim of establishing the center in 1985 was developing a recreational garden, it has evolved into a dynamic research institution over the years. There are many recreational opportunities to attract visitors, like boating in the lake, orchidarium, palmetum, wild fruit garden, children’s play area, bamboo setum and a seed bank.

Morning walk is allowed to the public from 5-30 am to 7-30 am from March-October and from 6-00 am to 8-00 am during November-February months. Garden visit is from 8 am to 6 pm during winter and from 8 am to 7 pm during the summer. The entry fee is Rs 25 per adult and Rs 7 for kids below 12 years.

There is a sales counter of plants at RPRC, which opens from 7 am to 12 O’çlock and 2 pm to 5 pm during winter and 6 am to 11 am and 3 pm to 6 pm during summer.

Opening and Closing time (Botanical Garden):

Between 8 am and 6 pm during winter and 8 am to 7 pm during the summer.

Must see: Migratory birds in the lake when it is winter, the unavoidable Cactus collection, Orchidarium, Bamboo setum, Wild fruit garden, and Palmetum.

  1. Ride around the old city in a Rickshaw

While the city of Bhubaneswar is developing fast and turning into a Smart City, the charm of the historic old city is not lost on the visitors. And the best way to get the incredible sights of the Old Town, unhindered by any distractions is to hire a cycle rickshaw and roam around the narrowest lanes, to see rare sights and historic things that one would otherwise miss out on. The major attraction of the old city is the religious atmosphere which is engrained in the life of people living there. Along with the architecture of the 1950s and beautiful structures that have turned to ruin over the year, there are many residential structures that have existed there for a long time and would leave any newbie traveler awestruck. There are also many medieval temples along the way.

Must see:  Lingaraj temple, Mukteswar temple, Rajarani temple, Bindusagar, Brahmeswar temple

Dos and Dont’s:     Check with the temple staff before entering the temples. Non-Hindus are not allowed inside several shrines.

  1. Get your lungs healed at the Medicinal Garden

Inhale some of the fresh air while ditching your air-conditioned stale air. Head over to Ekamra Van Medicinal Plant Garden that is located on the banks of holy Bindusagar. Inhale some of the fresh healing air into your lungs while hearing the divine chiming of temple bells and chanting as well. The medicinal garden inhibits more than 200 varieties of plants along with a beautiful pond and many stone sculptures.

Opening and Closing time: 8 am to 5 pm

Must see: The magnificent view of Lingaraj temple, Lord Lingaraj representation through Shiva Pindi, Spice herbs used for local cooking and animal figurines, etc.

Timings: During winter morning 8 am to 12 noon and 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm and during summer 8 am to 12 noon and 3 pm to 6 pm.

  1. Go cycling near the Botanical Garden by the Kanjia lake

With the calm gentle breeze blowing near the Kanija Lake, even a simple bicycle ride can give you loads of enjoyment. The roads inside botanical gardens are well-suited for cycling and will make you pass by beautiful flowers and canopy of trees. The Park also includes a Mughal Garden and a Japanese garden. One can also see varieties of migratory birds on the lake.

Opening and Closing time: April to September (7.30 am. to 5.30 pm.) and October to March (08.00 am. to 5.00 pm.).

Must see: Bird-watching is a must-do activity. One should also visit Orchid Garden, Dry Garden, Rose Garden,  Medicinal Garden, Mughal Garden, Japanese Garden, Arboretum, Bougainvillea Garden, Butterfly Garden, Heritage Garden, and Evolution Garden.

  1. Bring out the shopaholic in you at the laid-back flea market

Who doesn’t like shopping? But more often than not, shopping at touristy places burns a hole in your pocket. If you want to buy some goodies at a cheap rate, visit the flea markets of Bhubaneswar. The roadside stalls and range of flea markets offer a lot of opportunities to become a spendthrift. The most recommended market would be Uni I Market where you can buy jhumkas, bangles, and other accessories at cheap rates. Men can also find jackets, shoes, scarves etc. There are many options for bags, books, toys and electronics sold at a wholesale rate. You can also visit the Indradhanu market and the Damanahaat which are just as good for shopping. Do give yourself small time to refresh and try out that lip-smacking Bara-ghugun and Gupchup (golgappas).

Dos and Donts:     Be careful of pickpockets, put your bargaining skills to negotiate and double-check all the items for any damage.

Karanataka’s Hidden Wonders: A menu of Unexplored Karanataka

Karnataka continues to gain popularity among tourists on the back of its biggest attraction – the Nightlife of Bangalore, the markets of Mysore, etc. However, there are some hidden gems that remain unknown. Today we bring you a list of Bangalore’s hidden wonders

1. Bidar

Bidar’s wealth of monuments is simply inconceivable – with 61 monuments of which at least 30 are tombs. It has been associated with the Mauryan empire and finds a mention in Mahabharata, Harivamsa, Bhagavata, Purana, Malavikagnimitra, etc. The monuments here though were mostly built by Muslim rulers.

2. Anegundi

A 20 km ride on State Highway 49 from Hampi will take you to the next item in our list of Karnataka’s Hidden Wonders – Anegundi. It is claimed this almost forgotten town served as the Kishkindha, the kingdom of monkey kings Bali and Sugriva mentioned Hindu epic Ramayana and which was also the abode of the monkey god Hanuman. Anjanadri Parvatha is believed to Lord Hanuman’s birthplace and has a temple dedicated to him right at the top. Apart from that, there is not much to see here apart from the lush greenery. That said, Anegundi has a history far older than Ramayana – and is said to have been settled in for four billion years based on researches carried out by geologists who have found stone age traces here.

3. Badami

The first in our list of Karnataka’s Hidden Wonders is Badami. In its most glorious days, Badami was the capital of Badami Chalukyas but now it is a relatively forgotten town though it still stands in all its splendor. Among the sites to see is Agastya Lake next to which are cave temples design in Dravidian architecture, made of two giant sandstone hills.

4. Arbi Falls, Dashrathnagar, Manipal

Arbi falls are located at a distance of 5 kilometers from Manipal which, in turn, is located at a distance of mere 64 kilometers, the nearest major tourist destination of Karnataka via  NH 66 and SH 67.  From the base of the hill, the falls is just a small hike away. This hidden wonder of Bangalore is relatively unknown to the mainstream tourists and thus a nice peaceful place – far more peaceful than more popular waterfalls and thus making it second in our list of Karnataka’s Hidden Wonders.

5. Shivagange

Third, in our list of Bangalore’s Hidden Wonders Despite being located so close to Bangalore, Shivagange peak continues to get ignored by the tourists. For locals, though it is an important Hindu pilgrimage site. The site of the worship comprises of Shivalinga-shaped mountain and a spring that comes out of it locally known as Ganga. The site is also home to sculptures of Nandi or Basavanna that are brilliantly carved on the top of a steep rock. You can reach the site after an easy hike too.

There are some other temples nearby – and you must also see the cave temple of Sri Gangadhareshwara that, if mythical legends can be believed, is connected by a secret tunnel to the garbha griha (sanctum sanctorum) of another temple to the Gavi Gangadhareshwara temple in Bengaluru.

6. Augumbe

Now something that fiction lovers can’t ignore, this relatively unknown town has been labeled as Cherrapunjee of South. However, the reason why it makes to our list of Karnataka’s Hidden Wonders is it’s having served as the basis of Sahitya Academy Award-winning author RK Narayan’s magnum opus Malgudi Days.

If you have a nostalgia for the imagined town of Malgudi immortalized by Narayan’s works, you must visit the Malgudi Mane here. We also recommend watching the sunrise on Kundadri Hills.

7. Bijapur

Established around a thousand years ago, by the Chalukyas of Kalyani, Bijapur was initially christened as Vijayapura or the City of victory. If you are a history freak, the lack of Bijapur’s popularity might bewilder you. The city has several historical monuments like Ibrahim Rauza, Gol Gumbaz,  Anand Mahal, umma Masjid, Jod Gumbaz, J Saat Manzil, Jal Manzil, etc – mostly built during the rule of Adil Shah dynasty, still waiting to be recognized by the tourism industry. It is this very lack of popularity though which has earned it a place in our list of Karnataka’s Hidden Wonders.

8. Mullayanagiri

Mullayanagiri is named after the great sage Mullapa Swamy, a temple to whom is dedicated to the peak of the mountain. Despite its location near Bangalore and it’s being one of the best if not the best trek in the state, Mullayanagiri fails to attract tourists.

8. Shivanasamudra

Shivasamandua is a small island town where Kavei drops down to form to incredibly beautiful waterfalls -Gaganachukki and Bharachukki which are together called the Shivanasamudra falls and earn it a place in the list of our list of Karnataka’s Hidden Wonders.

The town also has ancient temples such as those dedicated to Sri Ranganathaswamy, Sri Someshwara, etc that constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture.

9. Shettihalli

The Church here, Shetttihali Church is also known as the Submerged Church and the Floating Church and is the next item in the list of our list of Karnataka’s Hidden Wonders. It was built by French missionaries in the late 1800s and later become an abandoned sight with the construction of the Hemavati which leaves it partially submerged during monsoons.

10. Chitradurga

Next in our list of Karnataka’s Hidden Wonders is Chitradurga, claimed by many to be the birthplace of Hidimba and Hidimbi, the demon brother-sister duo from the Mahabharata. The place is home to rocky hills and beautiful valleys a fort known as Kallina Kote or a stone fortress that has 18 temples.

According to a legend, Obavva, the wife of a guard, once single-handedly managed to kill several soldiers of Hyder Ali’s (Tipu Sultan’s father) army who were trying to infiltrate into the fort with an Onake (which is a long wooden club meant used by women pounding paddy grains), before giving in to her injuries.

11. Marvanthe

Next in our our list of Karnataka’s Hidden Wonders is Marvanthe. Marvanthe is home to Karnataka’s most amazing sea beaches. A drive on National Highway is another valuable experience worth having as you drive between the Souparnika river which flows right next to the Arabian Sea.

12. St. Mary’s Island

Last in our list of Karnataka’s Hidden Wonders is St. Mary’s Island. Named as one of the 26 Geological Monuments of India in 2001, by the Geological Survey of India, the island is supposed to the place where Vasco De Gama first landed before he ‘discovered’ India. According to the legend, it was he who named the island upon landing here.

Conclusion

Even with this additional list of attractions, we can’t fully enumerate all the wonderful places there are in Karanata. There are, for example, Talakadu, the temple town of Banavasi, Karkala, Gadag, Bylakuppe, etc – not to mention Hampi which we believe has made it to the list of prominent attractions ever since the publication of V. S. Naipaul’s infamous book ‘India: A Wounded Civilisation’. But we do hope this gives you some ideas. Tell us what other places should have made it to this list in your opinion. Gir National Park, where adventure never stops roaring

You cannot travel to Gujarat but miss out on the epic journey to the Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary. Deadly as they may sound, Asiatic Lions are a glorious sight to behold and you will not find the sight anywhere apart from Gir.

History of Gir Forest

Girl National Park was made into a wildlife sanctuary in 1965 but even before that, back in the 1900s the lions of Gir forest were declared protected by the then Nawab of Junagadh. Since when Junagadh was a princely state, lions used to be hunted down for pleasure following which only 15 lions remained in the forest. The Nawab decided to conserve the remaining lion population and put a ban on hunting them for trophies. Asiatic Lions once used to be found in Africa, Northern Greece and some other parts of the world but now Gir National Park or the adjoining area is the only remaining habitat of 411 Asiatic lions.

Located in Gujarat, it is the only forest where Asiatic Lions (Panthera leo persica) can be spotted. Situated 65 km away from Junagadh, this Wildlife Sanctuary covers 1412 sq kilometre area. The people of Gujarat refer to it as the pride of Gujarat. We have been to tiger reserves (since there are 15 in the country) but Gir was the first and only Lion reserve we had the chance of visiting.

How to reach the Gir national park?

By road: Junagadh and Rajkot are the nearest cities and public transport is available to take you to Gir.

By Air: Rajkot airport is the nearest airport and is about 3.5 hours away from Gir.

By Train: Junagadh Railway station is the nearest railway station.

Get a permit beforehand

Ever since The Supreme Court has restricted the number of safaris per day in wildlife sanctuaries, it is hard to get a permit. We booked a permit online but it has to be done two months in advance since Gir National Park is on high-demand among wildlife enthusiasts. Safari permit itself costs Rs 500 online and it is the same if you buy it at the counter as well. But considering the long queues at the counter, we were happy about booking our slot online months in advance. Along with the permit, there are separate costs for the jeep and the guide. So overall, the safari would cost you Rs 2200. A jeep accommodates 6 people and you can mention it all while booking online along with giving the ID proof of one individual.

Best safari time-slot and pre-safari work

Gir has 3 slots available in a day for Safaris: 6-9 am, 9am-12pm and 3-6pm. The best time slot is the morning slot because there is less heat and the chances of spotting a lion are also higher. After booking online, all we had to do was go to a separate online counter and get our route number. 7 routes go inside Gir Forest and everyone is allotted their jeep, guide and route. We got Route 4. The entire process took about 10 minutes.

 

Our visit to the Gir National Park

Gir National Park was always on our list of places to see before we die since it is one of the most talked-about destinations for every wildlife enthusiast. While once the population of lions in Gir used to be scarce, now the density is high due to the efforts of the Forest Department. We visited Gir during April and stayed at The Gateway Resort, Gir which is quite close to the forest range.

The Resort helped us book a lodge for the morning safari and after our morning coffee early at 5 am, we were ready to greet the majestic lions. The best way to travel around Gir National Park is in the jeep so firstly we travelled to the Forest Department office and switched jeeps to go deep inside the forest that we were there to explore.

The safari began at 6 am and we waited at the gates for the morning safari to begin. Gir forest is a dry deciduous forest. The jeep covered uneven paths and gradually we went deeper into the dense forest, our eyes focused on any flash of yellow and our ears keen to hear dry trees and twigs break under the impact of the jeep tyres. We scanned around, careful and excited to see if we could be the ones to spot the lion before our guide. The first animal we came across was a peacock followed by many deers.

An hour passed with us staring at the trees and forest cover. By this time, the sunlight had also started creeping in and spreading on the ground. We had started getting a bit disheartened until we heard a loud roaring sound and our jeep came to a halt. The sound was making ripples across the otherwise quiet forest. Soon, a bike appeared and on it, one man who the guide told us was the caretaker of the lions. He told us a story of how lions had gotten familiar to their scent and uniform that one time a cub had taken it to an injured lioness so he could get her help. He was the one who took us to the lions. The jeep’s engine was turned off and there was complete silence all around. The caretaker was making a kind of whistling sound and we were waiting patiently in our jeeps, hoping to spot a lion or a lioness.

Soon, a majestic lioness came walking with her three cubs. The cubs roared but it was a tiny shrill sound that made us smile with joy. Both our guide and the caretaker were alert and observed their every step. Even though they were familiar with the scene, they are careful in case there is an unprecedented attack.

The lioness got closer to our jeep and we were both scared and excited. We stood still and tried to click a picture only when the lioness turned around or was at a distance. It sat down a short distance away and we started clicking as many pictures with as many angles as we could. The best part about the sight was the tiny cubs who played with grass and often jumped on the lioness in their playfulness.

After staying there for short while, we moved ahead hoping to see another such sight. We came across other animals like a fox and some deer who merrily walked around in the forest. There were some small cottages built by tribals in the middle of the forest as well. The tribe coexisted with the lions in the forest and despite it being a National Park, they were never forced to leave.

We did not catch another sight of the lions but were quite satisfied with the earlier spectacle. Our guide kept pointing out different birds to us and we were surprised by his keen eyesight. The fact that he could point out a brown oil sitting in a brown tree shows something about his expertise. On route 4, there lies a Kamleshwar Lake near to a tower that gives a spectacular view of the jungle. Kamleshwar Lake was the habitat of many crocodiles so we were told to maintain our distance but we were still able to spot the back of a crocodile from a distance. The guide kept us hoping for a leopard sighting as well which is very rare. But unfortunately, we could not spot one.

By 9 pm, our Safari had ended and we moved back to our resort.

When to visit?

The National park is closed during Monsoons so the best time to visit is summers. Gujarat has a very hot climate so during summers, the lions come out to drink water and move around a lot. They are visible at watering holes more often than in any other season. One can visit even in winter since the weather is better and you don’t have to suffer the harsh climate in an open-jeep but the chances of spotting a lion in winter are less. What’s a visit to Gir without spotting a lion in all its glory?

Where to Stay?

There are many hotels and resorts available at Sasan Gir, the best one being The Gateway resort which is part of the Taj Group. Then there is the Sinh Sadan Guesthouse which belongs to Gujarat Tourism. Whatever hotel you book, check the location and availability of a swimming pool. You would want a place as near to the forest as possible for the best experience. Also, after a hot day in the safari, soaking in the pool feels heavenly.

Although you can go anywhere, there is no place better than Punjab to be around Lohri. We recommend making Amritsar as your destination. Visit Lohri Mela there; the prestigious golden Temple, the most important religious spot for Sikhism, and Jallianwala bagh which still has the aura of terror created by the 1919 massacre there.

February 21 to 23

Mahashivratri falls on February 21 in 2020 which is a Friday and thus adds an extra day to your weekend.

Suggested place to visit:

Ujjain is one of the best places to celebrate it. Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the 12 jyotirlingas. The festival is celebrated on the banks of the local river Kripa. According to the local legend, Lord Shiva took residence here on request of citizens of Avanti (the ancient city later renamed as Ujjain). The request was made after Shiva vanquished Dushana, a demon who tortured the people of Avanti. Kal Bhairva Temple, Ram Mandir Ghat, Bharatihari Cave are some of the other spots you can visit.

March 7 to 10

The colorful festival of Holi falls on a Tuesday in 2020. Thus you might have to take a leave on Monday, March 9, but it shall leave at your disposal a 4 day weekend from March 7 (Saturday) to March 10 (Tuesday).

Suggested Place to visit

Where better to go to celebrate Holi if you can go to Mathura and/or Vrindavan. The two towns of spiritual importance being connected to the life of Lord Krishna have many amazing temples to offer. And Holi is a popular festival here being a festival being much loved by Lord Krishna himself.

April 2 to 6

A gazetted holiday Ram Navami falls on April 2 (Thursdays) and another Mahavir Jayanti falls on April 6 (Monday). Weekend falls on April 4 and 5. if you can take a leave on April 3 (Friday). Even if you do not get the leave you still have a 3 day weekend (April 4 to 6).

Suggested places to visit

The longest weekend of the year is best celebrated by going to Karbatsk. The twin towns of Mussorie very deservedly called the ‘Queen of Hills’ is the perfect place to go to. If you are still tired from your last weekend travels, the holiday will be very laid-back lazying in the cradle of Himalayas. If fancy has you to see places; there are several to be found here – Kempty falls, mall road, Sir George Everest House, Sister’s Bazaar, Char Dukan, etc.

May 23-25

With the gazetted holiday of the festival of Id-ul-Fitr falling on May 25, Monday; we have another 3-day long weekend.

Suggested places to go

Darjeeling is our suggestion for this weekend. A chance to ride toy trains (especially through Batasia Loop) and Ropeways; river rafting, as well visiting Tiger Hills, Nightingale Park, Singhalia National Park, Rock Garden, the Peace Pagoda, Sandkhaphu, etc and of course the world-famous tea plantations are some of many attractions that this hill town has to offer.

October 2 to 4

October 2 is the National holiday being Gandhi Jayanti as always. In 2020 it falls on Friday giving you a three-day long weekend.

Suggested places to visit

Indore, aptly dubbed as the food capital of India, and now the cleanest city of the country is the place to be for the first half of this weekend – visit Rajwada Temple, Lal Bagh Temple, Indore Museum, etc are some of the places to visit in Indore. For the second half of the holiday make a trip to the holy island of Omkareshwar and holy town of Maheshwar.

October 24 -26

Dushera falls on October 26 which is Monday. You this have a three long weekend

Suggested places to go:

With relatively cool temperatures; it is a good time to visit the pink city of Jaipur. Amber city light and sound show, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, Jal Mahal, etc are some of the city’s countless attractions.

October 30 to November 1

The third long weekend in the blessed month of October is occasioned by Id-e-Milad which falls on October 30, a Friday in 2020 and thus… You guessed it, a three-day long weekend.

Suggested places to visit

Delhi shall be the destination we suggest for this 3 day weekend. The capital city has a rich history and is thus full of a number of attractive places to see like India Gate, Red Fort, Qutub Minar, Chandani Chawnk, Lotus Temple, Humayun Tomb, Rashtrapati Bhavan to name a few.

November 13 to 15

Diwali, unfortunately, falls on November 14 a Saturday in 2020 but Chhoti Diwali which falls on a day before (November 13, Friday) will still increase your weekend to 3 days.

Suggested places to go

It is cliche to reserve Goa for Christmas or new year’s Eve and we have something special to suggest for Christmas. The occasion of Diwali is the occasion for Narak Chaturdashi which unusually celebrates the victory of a demon named Naraksur. The festival is marked by grand possessions throughout the state. And of course, there are beaches, wine, natural beauty, etc.

November 28 to 30

Guru Banal Jayanti falls on November 30, a Monday in 2020. This makes for another 3 day weekend.

Suggested places to go

If you haven’t already seen the Taj Mahal, let this be your occasion to make a trip to Agra. Jama Masjid, Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar’s tomb are some of the other places to see in Agra.

December 25 to 27

The Christmas day falls on a Friday bringing in another 3 day weekend with Saturday and Sunday that follows on December 26 and 27.

5 things not to miss in Bhubaneshwar

Bhubaneshwar (literally ‘king of land’) is the capital of Odisha and one of the major tourist spots of the country. With Puri and Konark, it forms Swarna Tribhuja (the golden triangle) – which is one of the biggest tourist attractions of the East. The attractions of the other two edges of this triangle – Puri, and Konark can be summed up in two words – temples and beaches but Bhubaneshwar is so much more.

There is so much to do in this city but here are the five things that we ghoomophirosisters, personally have enjoyed doing a lot

1. Visiting Temples

The place where Bhubaneshwar is now was once called Ekamra Kshetra meaning temple city. In fact, Bhubaneshwar continues to be called the temple city. There are over a thousand temples in the city and it is next to impossible to visit them all but some of the best ones definitely deserve attention.

The Lingaraj temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is the most popular temple in the city. Other famous temples are Rajarani Temple Muktesvara Temple, Ananta Vasudeva Temple etc.

Rajarani temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and has some of his amazing images doing various dance mudras. It was once called Indreshwara and drives its present name from the rock with which it is built ‘Rajarani’. Locally though it is known as ‘love temple’ because of several erotic cavings made on the walls.

Muktesvara temple is second only to Lingaraja temple in terms of architectural beauty and is called ‘gem of Odisha architecture’.

Ananta Vasudeva Temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. Krishna, Balarama and Subhadra are worshipped in this temple built in the thirteenth century. Balarama stands under a seven hooded serpent, the image of Subhadra shows her holds Jewels pot and lotus in her hands while keeping her left foot over another jewel pot. The image of Krishna holds a mace, chakra, lotus and a conch

One of the chief attractions of temples is the food on offer. Abadha of Lingaraj Temple and Ananta Vasudeva Temple serve for their devotees is considered a vegetarian culinary delight. Other vegetarian dishes include Dalma (made of lentils and vegetables boiled together and then fried with other spices) and Santula (lightly spiced steamed vegetables).

2. Tribal Research Institute Museum

Tribal Research Institute Museum, also known as ‘Museum of Man’ and get a chance to observe and study tribal art and artifacts, displayed in its five different parts You will find Personal Adornments in first Hall, Belongings, Arts, Paintings & Photographs in second Hall, Hunting & Fishing Implements & Weapons of Offence and Defense in the third hall, Household Objects and Agricultural Implements in the fourth hall and Dance, Musical Instruments and Dhokra Items in the fifth hall.

A visit to this museum gives you a chance to observe closely the culture of the tribal population which, despite so much focus on our own heritage, has not to get the attention it so well deserves.

3. Dhauli hills

Visiting Dhauli Giri makes you feel that you have been kidnapped in the TARDIS and dropped in ancient India The site is of great historical importance, as it was the place where the famous Kalinga was taken place. The war that melted the heart of great King Ashoka, and made him convert to Buddhism. The Shanti Stupa here is mesmerizing. Among other attraction of this place are other Ashoka edicts Budha statue, Shiva temple, and white peace pagoda. Many of these are supposed to have been built at the end of war ushering an age of prosperity and peace for India.

4. Local Cuisine

We have already mentioned the food served at temples but now for foodies who want something non-vegetarian. A fish curry known as Machha Jhola is a must if you visit the city. You can combine it with yummy items like Rasagola, Rasabali, Chhena Jhilli, Chhena Gaja and Chhena Poda.

Gupchup which is a deep-fried crêpe, stuffed with a mix of mashed potatoes and boiled yellow peas, and afterward, dipped in tamarind-infused water is a locale special. Other street food items include more widely known food items of the country like Cuttack-chaat, Dahi Bara, Aloo dum (a deep-fried lentil dumpling marinated into the yogurt-infused water, and served along with potato curry) and Bara-Gauguin

Dahi-Pakhal (rice soaked in water with yogurt and seasonings)  is considered as a body coolant, accompanied by Badi Chura or saga are consumed during months of April–June. If you visit Bhubaneshwar and are unable to bear the heat, you now know what to eat.

And a visit to Bhubaneshwar is incomplete if you haven’t tasted the huge variety of sweets it has to offer.

5.Nandankanan Zoological Park

India’s first zoo to join  World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Nandankanan ( literally ‘garden of paradise’ ) zoo and botanical garden is home to several rare and endangered species like Asiatic lions, Indian crocodilians, big rock Pythons, White tigers etc. White Tigers are always majestic and also scary! There is an aquarium too and a reptile park here too. One of the most fun things was that the reptile park was guarded by a Tyrannosaurus Rex!

Biju Patnaik Park

Biju Patnaik Park is named after a chief minister of Odisha.  The park has a lake – you can a walk around or boating in it. The best attraction of the park though is the refreshing way in which water of the fountain dances to music. Don’t miss the splendid evening it has to offer.

Conclusion

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Bhubaneshwar has far, far more to offer. I have just run out of my fingers. Among the other tourist spots are included Odisha State Museum,  Pathani Samanta Planetarium, Regional Museum of Natural History, Regional Science Center and State Handicrafts Museum. Day girl and Khandagiri Caves etc. Also, make sure to go shopping in urban half of Bhubaneshwar to get some souvenirs. Definitely consider buying Patthachitra paintings, palm leaves carvings and other such handicrafts to be able to take something of the city with you. If you are into Odishan movies, Ollywood might also interest you. Odissi dance is generally accompanied by Odissi music. Srjan, the famous Odissi dance academy founded by Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, the legendary Odissi dancer is found here. The Rabindra Mandap in central Bhubaneswar might also interest you, do check if it might be hosting some cultural program, dance, theatre or private function which it frequently does. .There is so much you can do – why haven’t you already started backpacking?
