The image that comes to one’s mind when one thinks of Hong Kong is a chaotic city full of skyscrapers, corporate culture – and what with it being one of the biggest business hubs of the world, it is hardly surprising. But it hardly true, more than half of Hong Kong is a rural area and it has lots of mountains in it offering you options for amazing hiking experiences. Today we bring you a list of top 8 Hiking trails of HongKong:

1. Sunset Peak Hiking Trail

The highest peak in Hong Kong is located in Lantau Island and offers a trail that, if you wish it, can be as long as 70 kilometers. Along the way, you will come across Hong Kong’s International airport, a couple of historic sights, and lots of stunning sights created by nature including some small waterfalls. The peak is the highest point in Hong Kong and is, as the name suggests, is the black to see the sunset in Hong Kong.

How to reach Sunset Peak Hiking Trail?

You can take an MTR to Tung Chung and from there a 3M bus that will take you into Mui Wo on the island. You can also get a ferry to Mui Wo from Center Pier.

From Mui Wo, you can now walk or just take a 5-minute taxi up to Pak Kun Au. Here, you must lookout for the lush picnic site. This is where you’ll find the signposts for Lantau Trail Stage 2 and Sunset Peak, marking the beginning of Hike.

2. Lantau Peak Hiking Trail

This is the second-highest peak in Hong Kong at 934 meters. The trail shares much with Sunset Peak Hiking Trail in the neighbor of which it is located.

At the top of Lantau Peak, there is the grand Big Buddha statue and monastery, which is an awesome place to click some snaps and grab some food. And you can take the Ngong Ping cable car back down the mountainside and enjoy some more incredible sights along the way.

The hike is rendered different from incline along the way but rendered somewhat easier by the paved paths which form most of the trail.

Located on the southern side of Hong Kong island, Dragon’s Back Peak has been declared the best urban hike in the whole continent Asia by Time Magazine. It is also the hike that you are most likely to be recommended to take if you ask the locals.

There is nothing urban-like despite what Time says about this trail except for the fact that it is so deceptively close to Hong Kong’s skyscrapers. Despite being so close to the urban world though, nature breathes freely on this hike and spreads its beauty freely. Along the trail, you will be greeted by stunning views of Clearwater Bay and a number of uninhabited islands of the South China Sea.

The ridges of Shek O forms this 4-hour long Hike and Shek O rests on the end of this trail. Shek O is a small village with a few bars and restaurants as well as a couple of excellent beaches. However, tourists are mostly dependent on trams that land them directly at peak. However, the pleasure-driven from panoramic sights Peak offers are far superior if you reach thereafter that challenging hike that precedes it.

The challenging hike has to offer is mostly exhausting effort needed on this hike that inclines heavily upward. You can, of course, take the tram on your way back.

Though there are a number of ways to reach it, we recommend is starting from the grounds of the University of Hong Kong.

Pure recreational activity

While on a trek, there is no loud music that can cause anxiety. Contrarily there is just nature and its components that offer you the soothing touch. Trekking takes you away from the hustle and bustle of the fast-paced city away into tranquillity.

No burden on pocket

In contrast to clubbing that involves hefty expenditure, going on a trek is cheap. All that it takes is you to have the required clothing and equipment to head out and rest there is a minimal expense that you are required to undertake. Trekking is pocket-friendly for all and sundry.

Chikmagalur: Karanataka’s Beauty Spot

During our travels in Karnataka, the hill station of Chikmagalur was one of the topmost of the cities we intended to visit because of its countless attractions.

How to reach Chikmagalur?

By Air

The town does not have an airport of its own and the nearest airport is Mangalore airport which is 113 kilometers away which is well connected to major cities of the country. You can hire a prepaid taxi from there.

by Road

Chikmagalur enjoys good road connectivity to cities like Bangalore, Mangalore, Hubli, and Hassan via state-run and private buses.

By Rail

Chikmagalur does not have a railway station and the nearest station is 40 kilometers away in Kadur but you can hire a taxi from there. This is the option we took.

Places to visit in Chikmagalur

1.    Kudremukh National Park

Located at a distance of about 96 km from Chikmagalur city, this National Park is at a high latitude which ensures a cool temperature even in the worst of the summers. We loved this National Park for giving us a break from the heat of summers but far more for the tremendous diversity of its flora and fauna. The national park gets its name from the ‘Kundre’, the Kannad word for a horse and ‘mukh’ which is Kannad word for face. The name is inspired from a hill here which is shaped like the head of a horse. Three rivers  – Tunga, Bhadra, and Nethravati originate from within this national park. We also visited a cave that serves as a temple here devoted to goddess Bhagavati – a statute of which is kept inside the temple. This cave is of great spiritual importance among the local Hindus.

We didn’t spot a tiger here because of a rare case of bad luck but we spotted a barking deer and a couple of leopards and a bear and, overall, it was an amazing experience.

Another amazing sight was Kandambe falls which held us captive with its first sight for several minutes with its stunning beauty. We reached the falls in the afternoon and spent some time nearby orchids (with permission of their owners of course) and when we came back for a last look at falls, we saw Jackal visiting the falls.

2.    Mullayanagiri

Chikmagalur holds the highest mountain peak of Karnataka – Mulllayanagiri which rises as high as 2000 meters and offers several incredible trekking trails. We spent a whole evening trekking amidst stunning scenery created by the flora here to reach a temple right at the very top which is dedicated to Lord Shiva and attracts hundreds of devotees.

3.    Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary

Another wildlife protected area, Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as the Muthodi Wildlife Sanctuary, is about 35 km from Chikmagalur town. This wildlife sanctuary is home to a number of exotic wild animals and birds. This time we got a chance to spot a tiger during our Jeep Safari but the tiger was only one of sights we were offered by this sanctuary filled with a tremendous abundance of flora and fauna. is about 35 km from Chikmagalur town.

The Sanctuary gets its name from Bhadra region from which it gets its name. The river is surrounded by deciduous forests which have over a hundred species of trees – of which we recognized rosewood, teak, mathi, Kindal, etc. Among fauna, an expert will be able to spot about 250 species of birds but since we were no experts, the Ornithologists that accompanies acted as our encyclopedia. The sanctuary is also claimed to have king cobra and pit viper among other reptiles as well as marsh crocodiles that roam in the banks of small water bodies of the region.

4.    Sharadamba Temple

Located in Shringeri, a town in Chikmagalur district, Sharadamba Temple, Shardamba Temple Is the place where great Hindu sage Adi Shankaracharya set up his practice. Once he was walking by the Tunga River when he saw a cobra with its head raised high. Upon a little closer observation, he realized that the serpent was providing shelter to a spawning frog from the heat of the sun. Seeing this, he decided to set his abode here. He stayed for twelve long years teaching tenets of Hinduism to his disciples in the gurukul that he established here.

The temple stands at the banks of the Tungabhadra River and dates back to the 8th century and is dedicated to the goddess of wisdom. Praying to this goddess can, so the myth goes. improve your learning capacity. This reputation attraction a number of students as well as other people in pursuit of wisdom here. We paid our respects but since we had long ceased to take any maths tests, we didn’t feel compelled to pray for wisdom.

At the beginning of the 20th century the temple was entirely built out of wood, the statue of the goddess too was made of Sandalwood but then fire less destroyed the entire thing and thus the temple was entirely rebuilt and a statue made of gold was placed inside it. It now attracts thousands of pilgrims.

5.    Hebbe Falls

Next in our list of sights to see in Chikmagalur is Hebbe Falls. These enchanting falls are accessed from Kemmangundi hill station, located at a distance of 8 km from Chikmagalur. We reached them after walking the 8 km trek from Kemmangundi. The falls create a stunning sight surrounded as it is by astonishing greenery of dense forests, coffee plantations, and hilly background. The stunning effect was heightened for us by the music of splashing water that greeted our ears even before we had seen the falls; the serene weather and a chance to take a dip in the waters together making it a perfect picnic spot. The 168 meters fall is divided into two stages – the Big Falls called Dodda Hebbe and the Small Falls called Chikka Hebbe. The falls are also surrounded by some of the best homestays of the region one of which we chose as our accommodation after we had our fill of photography the immense beauty of the falls.

6.    Baba Budangiri (Datta Peeta)

Baba Budangiri also is known as Datta Peeta and the Chandra Drona Parvatha is located in the Baba Budan Giri range and named after the Muslim saint Baba Budan. Located at a height of 1900 meters, the sight has three caves. Three Siddhas, the religious oracles, are buried here. An annual ceremony is held in these caves. The places also have a popular Diwali celebration.

Sri Guru Dattatreya Bababudanswamy’s Darga, an ancient institution is located nearby and is respected both among Hindus and Muslims.

Another holy site nearby is a cave built by Dattatreyaswamy which is claimed to be the residence of Hazrat Dada Hayath Mir Khalandar.

Conclusion

Chikmagalur is one of the most important tourist attractions of Karnataka despite lacking direct connectivity. Here we have presented only a small list of its numerous attractions that also include nearby hill station Kenmmangundi, Kallathigiri Falls, Coffee Museum (yes you heard it), Bhadra Dam, Kadambi Falls, Manikyadhara Falls, etc. A hill station that you just can’t have enough of. 1. Kumta Beach Trek

When it comes to holidays, there is no such thing as sea beaches. And thus the first our list of 5 Offbeat Trek in Karnataka will end in Kumta Beach Trek. The beach is located at a distance of over 460 kilometers from Bangalore and offers all major delights that a beach can offer. Its distance from urban worlds ensures the freshness of the air that will greet you here. The trail, which starts at  Vanalli Beach and ends at Nirvana beach, has Kumata beach as a base camp, is surrounded by equally beautiful sights of hills and natural vegetation on both the sides as well as 10 pristine beaches.

Best visited during the winter season, the 20 kilometers trek is not too difficult in terms of terrain but can be a test of your endurance. Make sure to see the stunning sunsets and sunrises.

Add to the fun by camping on beech and sleeping under ever-gorgeous stars and enjoying local cuisine near a bonfire while playing group games.

2. Nishanimotte Trek

Coorg has been dubbed as the adventure capital of India but it also has several numerous other attractions – and one of them is Nashnimotte Trek, the second in our list of 5 Offbeat Trek in Karnataka. The 14-kilometer long trek in western ghats is surrounded by dense deciduous forests, meadows, ridge walks, etc on either side offering a moderate level of difficulty to the trekkers. The trek is the best experience in our opinion in Autumn-spring season. Besides such outdoor activities, like camping and cooking for oneself, the trek also offers opportunities to see the Talacauvery Temple and Bhagamandala Temple

3. Kurinjal Trek

This trek is located among the hills of incredible Kudremukha National Park. The national park takes its name from a hill which is shaped like the mouth of a horse ( the Kannada word Kudre means ‘horse’ and much means ‘mouth’).

This beautiful valley has several wild animals including tigers, langoors Baring deer, etc as well as the tall trees characteristic of Deciduous vegetation. Situated at a distance of over 350 kilometers from Bangalore, the trek is an amazing opportunity to go hiking in a place where you are also likely to come across wildlife. But first of all, make sure to obtain required permission from the forest department of the region. You will have to take special care not to litter or spoil in any manner the natural beauty of the place in any manner. The moderately difficult trek is a 16-kilometer long passage through every changing terrains and can experience all times of the year as being based in a hill station, it has a cool temperature through the year. On this trek, you will come across rich natural vegetation, some wildlife, Somavati Waterfall and, if you like, you can drive ahead and watch Belur temple.

4. Nagalapuram Trek

Next in our list of 5 Offbeat Trek in Karnataka is Nagalapuram trek. This 13 km trail oversees several pools and waterfalls. Since one of the main objects is taking a dip in waters, we were clever enough to take along water jackets which we ended up needing.

The trek is comparatively easy unless you are considering those dips in the water. Recently it has attracted many crowds and which has created a lot of litter and river too is getting pollution. Some measures need to be taken about that. Travelers too need to learn not to spoil the natural beauty of the place.

5. Kopatty Trek

Kopatty Trek of Coorg will be last in our list of 5 Offbeat Trek in Karnataka. The relatively easy 8-kilometer trek is ornamented with the lush greenery of tropical forests on either side. An arc at the entrance to the trail will lea you to Mahavishnu temple nearby. The first two kilometers or so of the trail are a tarred road that has paddy fields on either side. A muddy Jeep trek follows for another few minutes till you reach a stream, another few minutes later, you will enter the forest which again lasts only 2 kilometers before you hit a green meadow. A ten-minute ride to a flat top later you will be able to get a 360 degree of western ghats in all its paranormal beauty.

This trek offers you a chance to experience being in Coorg’s famous coffee plantations and a chance to visit Talacauvery Temple and Bhagamandala Temple

Conclusion

Being greedy foodies we are, we eat more than our share of food, well more than many people’s share of food, and that is all the more reason for us to go trekking every once in a while to stay fit. And these treks offer additional perk in the form of amazing sights they have to offer. What about you? What are your favorite treks in Karnataka? J

Brahmtal Trek, amid snowy fields and a frozen lake

Having been to many treks in our lifetime, mountains and breath-taking views are nothing new to us ghoomophiro sisters. But when it comes to the Himalayas, we always feel the challenge enthralling us, tempting us to come to see what lies beyond the city life. Brahmatal is a trek with the most fantastic views of Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti. So let’s take you on the journey to the Brahmatal summit with us.

Overview

Brahmatal is easy to a moderate winter trek. With two frozen lakes and panoramic views of the mountains, one has to walk approximately 24 km to undertake this 6-day trek. Situated in Uttarakhand, the Brahmatal Lake surrounded by snow-covered forests is at its grandest during December, January, February, and even March. The maximum altitude you have to endure is 12,100 ft.

How to Reach?

By train, via Kathgodam railway station which is connected to Lucknow, Delhi, and many other places. Train ticket for both sleeper and A/c class is cheap from Delhi with costs ranging between Rs 180 and Rs 450. But remember to book in advance.

By Bus, it is an 8-hour journey from Delhi to Kathgodam.

Day by day Itinerary

Day 1- Kathgodam – Lohajung

Our journey began once we reached Kathgodam from Delhi by train. We had already booked a trekking organization and many options are available online. As soon as we reached the station, we saw that the vehicles were waiting to pick us up and take us to Lohajung. It was 15 of us who were going on the trek. The road journey from Kathgodam to Lohajung was nothing but exposure to the beauty of Uttrakhand. The view was fantastic as we saw the marvels of nature on both sides. While the mountains stood tall and proud, the river flowed gently by. We crossed the Bhimtal Lake, Kausani and Dhewal on our way to Lohajung. It was a long and wonderful journey that took approximately 12 hours. We did stop at different places to have breakfast, lunch and the occasional tea. Once we reached the base camp at 7 in the evening, we ate dinner and were briefed about the upcoming days. We, the trekkers had already gotten familiar with each other. We sat and listened calmly about medical tips, trekking etiquettes, staying hydrated, etc. The day-long travel had already tired us and so we got inside our blankets and went to sleep.

Day 2- Lohajung – Bekaltal

The second day, our actual trek began and it spanned five hours with us trailing in and out of the treeline, all exposed to the marvelous views. The snaky trail took us firstly to a village called Mandoli. That was our first rest stop after moving from Lohajung. The trek got gradually harder as we ascended the mountain and we saw a breath-taking valley formed by the confluence of Mountain Kali and Pindari. There were many muddy huts on our way and we did stop to take pictures with them. From there, the rhododendron forests began which are a treat to the eyes. They grow red during February but while we were trekking, it was a light trail. The rhododendron trees are not too tall but give ample shade while walking. The oak forests and rhododendron forests right on our first day of trekking was proof that this trek was going to be memorable. As soon as we moved out of the forest cover, we saw a wooden bridge and reaching Begum, our next resting spot. Then on, we saw Gujrani Stream and many other streams. Then finally our long trail had ended and we ate dinner before resting for the rest of the night.

Day 3:- Bekaltal to Brahmatal

The next day when we woke up, we saw snow all around. There was snow on our tents and even though we felt like sleeping in for a little longer, we had to wake up at 6 in the morning and head out for our journey. There was no internet access but we chatted among the other trekkers and mainly enjoyed the walkthrough meadows of Telandi, all spread like a snowfield. After we crossed the meadow, the highest point in the trek, we started feeling the altitude shift since now we had to descend to reach the basecamp of Brahmatal. The atmosphere at Brahmatal was fantastic. There was a small temple there with bright yellow flags. Brahmatal Lake was a small walk from the temple and it was frozen in the stone-cold weather. We were surrounded by the Almora and Nainital valley as the Mountain peaks of Trishul, Nanda Ghunti and Himalayas stood strong and tall. As far as eyes could see, there was a soaring beauty of nature. The aura of Brahmatal Lake was simply incredible.

Day 4- Bramhatal – Bramhatal summit – Bramhatal

The next morning we woke up to the beauty of the frozen lake with the sunlight falling on it. As we walked ahead seeing streams being made out of melting snow, we felt like each slope was going to be the last. We had essentials in our backpacks and sometimes the beauty of trek was overshadowed by the tough times but the will to reach the top kept us going. The last 1 kilometer to the top was the hardest and a fight between going on and giving up. As the final walk ended, we sighed with relief. It was an inexplicable experience making it to the top as there we saw magnificent views of the mountains from the Brahmatal summit. The feeling of finally accomplishing what we had come to achieve was beyond imagination. It was one of the moments we would cherish all our lives.  The trail down is different than the trail that got us there since we saw a 180-degree view of the Himalayan Range. Click fantastic pictures of Nilgiri mountains, peaks of Mandi, Mana, Maitoli, Haukhambha and Nanda Ghunti.

Day 5: Brahmatal – Lohajung

Now it was the last day of walking and we were supposed to descend to Lohajung. It was a 10 km long trail with villages like Wan on the way. We started the trek back early in the morning and though the trail was mostly downhill, somehow we weren’t motivated enough for it. We wished to explore the trek, even more, stay there for little longer and capture as much as we could both on our cameras and our mind. The mental struggle of not wanting to leave with the physical struggle of hurting limbs and knees was weighing us down but our fellow trekkers and trek leader kept us going with fantastic mythological tales of Brahmatal. Time seemed to pass a little slower than expected and it was still an hour till we reached the basecamp and yet we already wanted to pass out in a tent nearby. When we finally reached Lohajung, it was still an accomplishment since now we had finished the complete trek successfully. Despite the adversities, we had made it back.

Day 6:- Lohajung to Kathgodam

Our last day was spend travelling back to Kathgodam from Lohajung. The night before, we had slept like dead horses with our limbs aching and us knowing that there was no more walking to be done the day after. We moved from Kathgodam after breakfast and said goodbye to the beautiful Uttarakhand. The trek wouldn’t have been truly complete without our pitstop at Kausani where we went souvenir shopping to commemorate a successful trek. After reaching the railway station, we were off to our journey back to Delhi.

It was when we were on the train that we thought about our entire experience. Life in the mountains is entirely different from city life. While city life is stressing, busy and challenging, the mountains challenge more than just your brains. They calm your soul, challenge your body, can be exhausting but the trekking experience is addictive. Trekking makes you feel closer to nature and also makes you realise how close you can be with the earth. The sight of clouds so near to us, marvellous sunset and grand mountains left an imprint on our hearts. Go Trekking towards Brahmatal whenever you wish, though we definitely recommend the winter trek. It might be harder but the views of snow-covered peaks and snowfields are worth it.

Tips to stay safe on a Monsoon Trek

Stay safe on a Monsoon Trek. Here’s how:

For a Trekker, Monsoons are no excuse and there is a different kind of joy in enjoying the beautiful sceneries and lush grass with water droplets accumulated on them. Rain just makes even the normal places look beautiful. But trekking in Monsoon requires a lot of care and thus I present a list of Tips that every trekker who wishes to go on a Monsoon Trek should know.

  1. Proper footwear is a must

Invest in some good shoes that have a strong grip and are comfortable. It is a one-time investment in some branded shoes that prevents you from slipping or falling. Rain makes the ground slippery, so proper footwear is essential to a monsoon trek. You must wear shoes with lugged outsoles that provide good ventilation. The off-road mud terrain inspired shoes would help you walk even on slippery surfaces and the mud won’t easily gather beneath it.

  1. Rain coat and poncho

An umbrella on a trek is useless. It just ties up one of your hands and is harder to handle with the winds continuously tugging at it. Go for a raincoat and a poncho to protect yourself from the rain. Either go for a two piece rain coat or a poncho for ease.

  1. Wear the right clothes

You would want to avoid wearing denim or cotton clothes as it tends to get heavy after getting wet. Wear a full sleeves shirt, to avoid sunburns, mosquito bites, thorns etc and quick drying trekking pants. Avoid wearing shorts because a slip in shorts would give you frayed skin and pants or trousers provide more protection.

  1. Take care of your feet

It is essential for a trekker to take good care of his feet, especially during monsoon treks. Keep your feet dry and take off your shoes and socks at any rest stop where you will stay for more than 20 minutes. Change socks at least once every day. Apply Vaseline to your feet at night before sleeping.

  1. Follow existing trails

Sometimes trekking trails become prominent over time. Walk only on existing trails and do not stray from the path. It is easier to get lost and these permanent trails are safe. You never know which path would be slippery or dangerous.

  1. Pack outside

Opening your backpack again and again during the trek for things like water, snacks and other essentials can get the moisture to fall inside the bag and that you will have to carry with you. Instead, pack things in outside pockets so they are handy and your bag doesn’t get wet.

  1. Water

Humidity makes you thirstier, so it is better to carry extra water or a water supply source like a water filter that will turn a non-potent water source to a potent water source.

Some additional tips:

(a)    If you wear specs, wear a baseball cap to avoid water from falling on it.

(b)    Take extra care of your electronic items and it is better to carry phones and GPS with a keypad instead of touch screen. The touch screen doesn’t work when it is wet. So either use keypad gadgets or carry micro fibre rags with you.

(c)    Even in rain, you have chances of getting a sunburn, so don’t forget to carry sunblock with you.

(d)    Monsoon tends to attract mosquitoes. It is advisable to carry mosquito repellent or mosquito nets.

And that’s all. Stay safe while trekking during the monsoon and enjoy the trails. Monsoon is the best time to trek, with great temperature and landscapes at their greenest and freshest point. Just take good care.
