A detailed itinerary for visiting Vaishno Devi this May or June

All about Vaishno Devi Temple

India is known worldwide as a land of religions and spirituality. While there are temples and places of worship throughout the country’s landscape, Vaishano Devi stands unique among them as one of the most valued temples in the country. Located in the serene Trikuta mountains of Jammu, it is considered one of the holiest shrines of our nation and attracts devotees not only from India but from all corners of the country. In this article, we shall discuss all one needs to know about visiting this temple, specifically in the months of May and June.

Firstly, let us be clear – it is likely to be crowded. Maa Vaishno Devi temple attracts over one crore worshippers. The crowd might actually make it easy to get into the spirit of being a devotee as one might enchant ‘Jai Mata Di’ while trekking on the thirteen-kilometer path.

Trekking is the most common and recommended path to Maa Vaishno Devi temple. There are two routes from Katra to Ardhkuwari, each differing in the distance, and another two routes from Ardhkuwari to Bhawan have two routes. Then there is the last route of about two kilometers from the Bhairavnath shrine to the Maa Vaishno Devi temple. The distance to be traveled will thus vary on the routes you chose but will be in a neighborhood of thirteen kilometers. Devotees prefer walking to the temple wherever possible, but there are options for ponies and talkies available. You might also consider a helicopter ride.

Bhairon Nath Temple, as mentioned above. is one of the places to stop while en route to Maa Vaishno Devi temple. It is dedicated to Baba Bhairavnath, who, so the myth goes, was killed by the MaaVaishno Devi goddess just as he was about to attack her by beheading him. However, he would later repent for his sins, and Maa would forgive him. According to this myth, your pilgrimage to the temple is incomplete without first seeking the blessings of Bhairon Nath.

At the end of the trek, you shall have reached Maa Vaishno Devi Mandir. It is one of the 108 Shakti paths and is dedicated to Maa Durga, the warrior goddess who is worshipped in her form of Maa Vaishno Devi here. After having visited the temple, we recommend exploring the following temples located in the vicinity of the temple:

1. Adh Kumari Temple

Adh Kuwari (adh meaning eternal and kumari meaning virgin) Tempe is another temple dedicated to goddess located at a distance of mere six kilometers from the main Maa Vaishno Devi temple. The temple falls about halfway through the trek to Maa Vaishno Devi temple.

2. Charan Paduka Temple

Located at a distance of mere 1.5 kilometers, Charan Paduka (Charna mean feet) is a small detour from the temple. The temple boasts of a rock on which imprints were created by the feet of the goddess.

It is considered the halfway mark to the main Bhawan of Vaishno Devi, situated at a distance of 6 km. The term Adh Kuwari means the eternal virgin and is regarded as one of the essential temples on the way to the holy cave.

It would be best if you also were prepared for any contingencies in such cases.

Answer: That boils down to several factors like accommodation option chosen, traveling option is chosen, method of covering the temple trek, etc.

If the reader has any other questions, they should feel free to ask them here.

One can easily wrap up the above discussion by concluding that Maa Vaishno Devi Temple is worth visiting in all months, and May and June might be an appropriate time to visit the temple. We hope that the above information shall help you have a good darshan of the maa devi.

What makes it a must-visit temple?

The prime attraction of the Triyuginarayan temple is the Trijugi Narayan Temple, where visitors worship the Lord Vishnu. The first glimpse of this temple appears quite similar to that of the Badrinath Shrine. Not just this temple has a historical significance but also becoming a popular site for destination weddings. It is a spiritual site where Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati tied the wedding knot and began their new life. Young millennials are fanatic about visiting here and indulge in heavenly wedding ceremonies.

The belief that there is a burning fire from the moment when the spiritual marriage of Goddess Parvati and Shiva took place drives couples to take blessings over here. That’s the reason why it’s a dream for young couples to solemnize their bond by paying a visit to this spectacular temple. As per the history of this temple, Lord Shiva and Parvati tied knots here almost three eons or Yuga back! Isn’t it a very long time? The temple derived its name from Tri, which means three, Yugi, which means Epochs, and Narayan, a name of Preserver Lord Vishnu!

Features of Triyuginarayan temple

The ancient legends of this magnificent temple engross the devotees deep into its valuable history. You cannot miss out on the ‘Akhand Dhooni,’ also known as an eternal fire that burns all the time at the shrine. Apart from this holy fire lit at the time Shiva-Parvati wedding, there are also 4 tanks or kund that hold a specific significance. There is a Rudra Kund where devotees can bathe, Vishnu Kund for self-cleansing, Saraswati Kund, which offers liberations, and the Brahma Kund to sip some water. Every pilgrim visiting this Hindu temple also moves to these Kund for holy reasons. The people who pay a visit to the Triyuginarayan temple also pay homage to the Gauri Kund temple, which is at the base camp, while going for the Kedarnath temple trek!

History

The local folklore tales state that Lord Brahma visited this shrine to offer the priestly services and commence the legendary wedding ceremony. Lord Vishnu performed all rituals on Devi Parvati’s brother’s part and completed the traditional wedding ceremony. There is also a stone known as Brahma Shila, which marks the temple’s exact wedding site. For the believers of eternal marriage bonds and conjugal happiness, carrying along the ashes of the sacred fire is a holy thing that maintains the divine relationship!

Rediscovery of Our Diverse Culture in Jaunpur

The historical city of Jaunpur is an important part of our heritage from Mughal times. In medieval times, Jaunpur was an important center of Sufi and Urdu culture and an example of good relations between Hindus and Muslims, an attribute still visible in the city’s art and architecture. Today, The city located in the district of Jaunpur in the state of Uttar Pradesh and is known for its wealthy and fertile land. The architecture in the region depicts an amazing blend of Islamic and Hindu elements that can only be found in a culturally diverse country like India.

Here, we shall tell you all you need to know for getting a maximum of attraction this little city has to offer.

History of Jaunpur

Historically known as Sheeraz-e-Hind, it was created by emperor Feroz Shah Tughlaq of the Tughlaq dynasty of Delhi Sultanate and named in memory of his cousin, Muhammad bin Tughluq, whose nickname was Jauna Khan.

Feroz Shah Tughlaq appointed Malik Sarwar, a eunuch, who was notorious for also having been the lover of Feroz Shah Tughlaq’s daughter, as the governor of the region in 1388. This was the time when the Delhi Sultanate was also declining because of factions forever fighting amongst each other for power and Malik Sarwar took advantage of the condition and declared independence. He adopted a son named Mubarak Shah and started what came to be known as Sharqi dynasty or the dynasty of the East. The dynasty was a big military power within the region – an empire extending from Bihar in West to Kanauj in the East. About a century later, Jaunpur was conquered back to Delhi Sultanate in 1493 by Sikander Lodhi of the Lodhi dynasty.

5 things not to miss in Bhubaneshwar

Bhubaneshwar (literally ‘king of land’) is the capital of Odisha and one of the major tourist spots of the country. With Puri and Konark, it forms Swarna Tribhuja (the golden triangle) – which is one of the biggest tourist attractions of the East. The attractions of the other two edges of this triangle – Puri, and Konark can be summed up in two words – temples and beaches but Bhubaneshwar is so much more.

There is so much to do in this city but here are the five things that we ghoomophirosisters, personally have enjoyed doing a lot

1. Visiting Temples

The place where Bhubaneshwar is now was once called Ekamra Kshetra meaning temple city. In fact, Bhubaneshwar continues to be called the temple city. There are over a thousand temples in the city and it is next to impossible to visit them all but some of the best ones definitely deserve attention.

The Lingaraj temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is the most popular temple in the city. Other famous temples are Rajarani Temple Muktesvara Temple, Ananta Vasudeva Temple etc.

Rajarani temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and has some of his amazing images doing various dance mudras. It was once called Indreshwara and drives its present name from the rock with which it is built ‘Rajarani’. Locally though it is known as ‘love temple’ because of several erotic cavings made on the walls.

Muktesvara temple is second only to Lingaraja temple in terms of architectural beauty and is called ‘gem of Odisha architecture’.

Ananta Vasudeva Temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. Krishna, Balarama and Subhadra are worshipped in this temple built in the thirteenth century. Balarama stands under a seven hooded serpent, the image of Subhadra shows her holds Jewels pot and lotus in her hands while keeping her left foot over another jewel pot. The image of Krishna holds a mace, chakra, lotus and a conch

One of the chief attractions of temples is the food on offer. Abadha of Lingaraj Temple and Ananta Vasudeva Temple serve for their devotees is considered a vegetarian culinary delight. Other vegetarian dishes include Dalma (made of lentils and vegetables boiled together and then fried with other spices) and Santula (lightly spiced steamed vegetables).

2. Tribal Research Institute Museum

Tribal Research Institute Museum, also known as ‘Museum of Man’ and get a chance to observe and study tribal art and artifacts, displayed in its five different parts You will find Personal Adornments in first Hall, Belongings, Arts, Paintings & Photographs in second Hall, Hunting & Fishing Implements & Weapons of Offence and Defense in the third hall, Household Objects and Agricultural Implements in the fourth hall and Dance, Musical Instruments and Dhokra Items in the fifth hall.

A visit to this museum gives you a chance to observe closely the culture of the tribal population which, despite so much focus on our own heritage, has not to get the attention it so well deserves.

3. Dhauli hills

Visiting Dhauli Giri makes you feel that you have been kidnapped in the TARDIS and dropped in ancient India The site is of great historical importance, as it was the place where the famous Kalinga was taken place. The war that melted the heart of great King Ashoka, and made him convert to Buddhism. The Shanti Stupa here is mesmerizing. Among other attraction of this place are other Ashoka edicts Budha statue, Shiva temple, and white peace pagoda. Many of these are supposed to have been built at the end of war ushering an age of prosperity and peace for India.

4. Local Cuisine

We have already mentioned the food served at temples but now for foodies who want something non-vegetarian. A fish curry known as Machha Jhola is a must if you visit the city. You can combine it with yummy items like Rasagola, Rasabali, Chhena Jhilli, Chhena Gaja and Chhena Poda.

Gupchup which is a deep-fried crêpe, stuffed with a mix of mashed potatoes and boiled yellow peas, and afterward, dipped in tamarind-infused water is a locale special. Other street food items include more widely known food items of the country like Cuttack-chaat, Dahi Bara, Aloo dum (a deep-fried lentil dumpling marinated into the yogurt-infused water, and served along with potato curry) and Bara-Gauguin

Dahi-Pakhal (rice soaked in water with yogurt and seasonings)  is considered as a body coolant, accompanied by Badi Chura or saga are consumed during months of April–June. If you visit Bhubaneshwar and are unable to bear the heat, you now know what to eat.

And a visit to Bhubaneshwar is incomplete if you haven’t tasted the huge variety of sweets it has to offer.

5.Nandankanan Zoological Park

India’s first zoo to join  World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Nandankanan ( literally ‘garden of paradise’ ) zoo and botanical garden is home to several rare and endangered species like Asiatic lions, Indian crocodilians, big rock Pythons, White tigers etc. White Tigers are always majestic and also scary! There is an aquarium too and a reptile park here too. One of the most fun things was that the reptile park was guarded by a Tyrannosaurus Rex!

And it is time for your bonus –

Biju Patnaik Park

Biju Patnaik Park is named after a chief minister of Odisha.  The park has a lake – you can a walk around or boating in it. The best attraction of the park though is the refreshing way in which water of the fountain dances to music. Don’t miss the splendid evening it has to offer.

Conclusion

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Bhubaneshwar has far, far more to offer. I have just run out of my fingers. Among the other tourist spots are included Odisha State Museum,  Pathani Samanta Planetarium, Regional Museum of Natural History, Regional Science Center and State Handicrafts Museum. Day girl and Khandagiri Caves etc. Also, make sure to go shopping in urban half of Bhubaneshwar to get some souvenirs. Definitely consider buying Patthachitra paintings, palm leaves carvings and other such handicrafts to be able to take something of the city with you. If you are into Odishan movies, Ollywood might also interest you. Odissi dance is generally accompanied by Odissi music. Srjan, the famous Odissi dance academy founded by Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, the legendary Odissi dancer is found here. The Rabindra Mandap in central Bhubaneswar might also interest you, do check if it might be hosting some cultural program, dance, theatre or private function which it frequently does. .There is so much you can do – why haven’t you already started backpacking?

#ghoomophirosisters visit to Lumbini

A trip to Nepal is incomplete without submerging oneself in the culture and beauty of the place called Lumbini. Known mainly for its deep connections with the story of Lord Buddha, the place is close to the bordering nation of India and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Buddha was born here, in-between the homes of his parents, in a sacred garden, while her mother was travelling.

Maya Devi

The mother of Lord Buddha, Maya Devi is greatly celebrated in the region of Lumbini. Her importance is manifold in the Buddhist literature and it speaks of the birth of Lord Buddha. It is believed that she dreamt of a white elephant and foresaw that she would give birth to ‘the great one’. Another important event she is associated with is the birth of Lord Buddha during travels when she was heading to her parents’ home in Devdaha from the place of her husband who was king Sudhodhan from the Sakya Clan. Many efforts were made for the preparation of the delivery.

Legend of Buddha’s Birth

The scene depicting Buddha’s birth can be observed in many Buddhist sites. The dream scene of Maya Devi and Buddha’s birth are two important visual incidents. In the scene of Buddha’s Birth, Maya Devi is seen accompanied by Lord Buddha’s foster mother- Prajapati Gautami.

The scene is shown as Maya Devi is at a pond in Lumbini, holding the branch of a tree above her as she gave birth in a standing position. It is believed that as soon as Buddha took birth, he walked seven steps and lotuses bloomed with each footstep, wherever his feet touched the ground. Along with that, people are of the faith that when he was born, Gods of three worlds: Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh came to receive the child. This is considered to be the beginning of the many miracles of Buddha’s life.

Maya Devi Temple – Lumbini

Maya Devi Temple is an ancient Buddhist temple and also a UNESCO World Heritage site. The temple is also known by the name of Maha Maya and the place where it is situated in Lumbini referred to as Pradimoksha Vana. While the temple laid deteriorating in the last few centuries, in recent years archaeologists have started excavation of the place and conserving all the findings.

There are also other important places to see as well such as Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, Kushinagar, Rajgriha and Vaishali

Things to see in & around Maya Devi Temple at Lumbini

Known mainly as the place where Buddha was born, there are many monuments to see inside the Maya Devi Temple.

Maya Devi Temple enclosure

As we entered the Maya Devi temple, walking on the wooden walkway around ancient ruins, looking at the large bricks arrangements, we were awe-struck and yet bedazzled by what we say. We could not quite make out what the place was supposed to be like. It was unlike any hall, monastery or temple. We could not tell if the place had been found like that or reconstructed over years. The temple enclosure with its white walls and a Buddhist Stupa on top that has the ruins of the ancient Maya Devi temple in it gave us a sight to behold.

Most of these structural ruins belong to the Gupta period i.e. 5-6th CE.

Nativity Sculpture and Marker Stone

At the end of the hall, there is a stone sculpture which has been rubbed down to such extent that nothing is clearly visible. It is believed that the statue is rubbed flat by the touch of so many devotees. Yet, this nativity sculpture dominates the aura of the place.

The Marker stone is situated beneath the nativity sculpture. A few feet below on the ground level, there is this irregularly shaped stone that has the marks of a human foot on it. It is believed to be the footprint of Lord Buddha but that is entirely a matter of faith. The stone is enclosed in bulletproof glass and is allowed to be looked upon. It is surrounded by currency notes of all kinds.

The marker stone has a long queue standing for just one look. One has to wait a long while to finally glance upon it and that too for barely a couple minutes.

Ashoka Pillar at Lumbini

Ashoka Pillar is a sight to behold. Standing tall at the back of the Maya Devi Temple, it is said to have been erected by Ashoka himself when he visited Lumbini. The inscription on the stone says – ‘Hida Budhe Jate Shakyamuniti‘ which means that Shakyamuni Buddha was born here. It is also mentioned that because Lumbini is the birthplace of Buddha, their taxes were reduced.

Pushkarni or the Sacred Pond

There is a beautiful and serene pond on the side of the Maya Devi temple. This is considered to be a sacred pond, the one in which Maya Devi took bath after giving birth to Lord Buddha. That gives a level of importance and holiness to the pond for the devotees. The pond that exists there on the date, is a recent reconstruction.

Near the pond, there exists a large Bodhi tree along with a shrine dedicated to Lord Buddha. There are plenty of other trees as well with round wooden benches surrounding them. People sat on these benches to relax or meditate. Walking near the pond, one sees the incredible sight of various colourful prayer flags tied to trees.

Standing beneath the barrage of colours, one sees a marvellous view of the pond and the Maya Devi temple. It creates a serene and joyful atmosphere all around.

Votive Stupas

There are many stupas, some Votive (built by the devotees after their wishes come true), some ancient (dating back to 1-3rd CE), some from different eras, surrounding the Maya Devi temple. The stupas vary in size and in their construction.

Some of the stupas have also deteriorated and close to ruination, though not as badly as the temple itself. It is not quite true that they would have been kept preserved. Probably, they haven’t been touched by people too much and thus still are better preserved. The votive stupas stand like pieces on a chessboard, an interesting sight to behold. It was a total set of 16 stupas, some circular and some square in shape.

Worship at Maya Devi Temple

On one of the evenings that we were there, we saw the Temple come alive with people from different places visiting. There were Buddhist monks from different countries performing their rituals.

Among them, was a group of Sri Lankan Monks who sat silently as the head monk went on to narrate the life and teachings of Lord Buddha for everyone. There was also a Chinese group that wore black robes and worshipped the images of young Lord Buddha. They also lighted lamps around Pushkarni, making the place light up like the eve of Diwali. Another group began praying and chanting hymns.

While the square stupas were being decorated with marigold flowers, another group decorated the Ashoka Pillar using a bright silk cloth. The Monks kept coming in and chanting along with other devotes. It was at that time that we felt the temple came truly alive with all the spiritual energy and peace. There was such devotion and energy in the atmosphere that it often felt overwhelming as we quietly observed it. It was at that moment; seeing the look of devotion on people’s faces that we felt that our trip to Lumbini was complete.

You need to walk a lot to see these temples

Though the temple and the places all around are open to visitors and travellers, they are not entirely tourist friendly as they are meant mainly for monks, Buddhist followers and people who live there. As an outsider, the most one can enjoy is the view and the architecture of the place, vaguely knowing the story of Buddha or the importance behind a particular structure. One can just admire the décor, statues as it represents the country and the religion.

But there won’t be much information about the temple itself or the religion that one can come across easily.

The best method to make the most of your trip would be to pick the particular temples you want to see and then focus upon those. If you try to see everything, you will end up disoriented after a while. Unless one has deep knowledge about the religion, there is not much that one would be able to appreciate about the temples apart from the structure and architectural design.

The Nepalese temple has a huge Buddha statue which is beautiful to look at and the German temple has murals. The Chinese temple is of beautiful red and yellow colour.

Lumbini Development Trust Museum

Lumbini Museum is not really a popular spot among people and with good reason. Standing at the end of one canal, it is a nicely shaped building of a bright red color. Though at first glance, it may look like a Buddhist Vihar, one would find no similarity upon entering. The tickets are bought from another building and you would have to cross a pond for that.

The Museum building may be beautiful but the reason why it sees such lack of crowd is that there are no real artifacts that it houses. There are plenty of replicas from other Buddhist sites like ones in Andhra Pradesh but he replicas lack the wonder and awe of the real stones. There are also some pictures of various popular Buddhist sites but none are too impressive.

The place is good enough to pass some time but not something particularly intriguing.

Walk around Lumbini Park

Lumbini Park is meant for people like us who love walking around. You can visit the park during the mornings or evening and see lots of other walkers enjoying the place as well. There are some water bodies nearby which attract birds and butterflies and one may even spot a Saras Crane during the winter season when the Migratory birds visit Lumbini’s wetlands.

There are some sections where one might need to take precautions since some of the roads are still under construction. Take proper care.

We had conversations with some monks and Bhikkunis. There were many young monks wearing their robes and looking half innocent half mischievous. We had some good time sitting and talking to the locals there, along with getting some good clicks as well.

Travel Tips for Lumbini – Nepal

  • You will have to walk through parks and large patches of jungles. So, it is highly suggestible to wear shoes that are comfortable.
  • Don’t expect restaurants or food to be available once you are inside Lumbini Park. There may be small ice cream and bhel vendors but it is preferable to eat before you’re visiting. There are still water shops available on the eastern side but none on the western side of the park.
  • Carry enough water bottles with you, no matter where you are visiting. Stay hydrated.
  • There is no availability of transportation facility inside the park. So, either hire a rickshaw in advance and use that or just roam around while walking on foot.
  • Though there is an option for a boat ride to go from one end of the park to another, you will not get to see all the temples on the way.
  • Be thoughtful of how you dress since it is a religious place.
  • The only places where you will need a ticket are Maya Devi temple as well as Lumbini Museum and that too, a small amount of INR 20/- each for Indians (including camera ticket). The rest of the places are free.
  • Temples and museums are open from 9 – 5 with a break from 1-2.
  • Maya Devi temple needs at least two hours of undivided attention. If you can spare only half a day, spend time at this temple.
  • Though the park remains open, it is not advisable to walk after dark.

A Walk through Lodi Gardens

Lodi Garden is one of the most beautiful parks in New Delhi. It is located between Khan Market and Safdarjung’s Tomb on Lodi Road. Lodi Garden is spread over 90 acres and has monuments of Mohammed Shah’s Tomb, Sikander Lodi’s Tomb, Sheesh Gumbad and Bara Gumbad.

It is landscaped with grass, flowers, and lakes, and is a hotspot for morning walks. Yoga classes are organized every morning in the park. The view from the middle of the bridge is captivating, especially on a bright sunny day, when the fountain is in full swing and one is lucky to see a rainbow.

The tomb of Mohammed Shah was built in 1444 by Ala-ud-din Alam Shah. Bara Gumbad and Sheesh Gumbad were built in 1494 during the rule of Sikander Lodi. Another tomb of Sikander Lodi, which is very similar to Mohammed Shah’s tomb, was built by his own son Ibrahim Lodi in 1517.

Lodi Dynasty ruled over several parts of North India in the 16th century, before the Mughal Dynasty came into force. They were not as popular as the Mughal Dynasty, but they left bits of their legacy in Delhi, Lodi Gardens being one of them.

After the Sayyid and Lodi dynasties, two villages grew around the monuments, but in 1936, the villagers were relocated in order to make the gardens. During the British Raj, it was landscaped by Lady Willingdon, and hence the garden was named as ‘Lady Willingdon Park’ in 1936. After Independence in 1947, it was given its present name, Lodi Gardens.

In the middle of the garden is the Bada Gumbad (big dome), which is a gateway to a mosque. Both the Bada Gumbad and the mosque were built in 1494, when Sikander Lodi was the ruler. The mosque is extremely captivating. It has three domes, an arched doorway and some beautiful-looking inscriptions on them.

Opposite to the Bada Gumbad is the Sheesh Gumbad (the glass dome), which carries the remains of an unknown family. The Sheesh Gumbad is covered with ceramic tiles, which glitter like piece of glasses when the rays of sun fall on them, giving the Sheesh Gumbad its name.

There are remains of a watercourse in the garden which connects the Yamuna River to the Tomb of Sikandar Lodi. Nearby Sikander’s tomb is the Athpula (“Eight Piered”) Bridge which was built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar. It has seven arches, amongst which the central one is the largest.

Muhammed Shah, the last ruler of the Sayyid dynasty, which was in force in Delhi before the Lodis came to power, was buried in the Lodi Garden. His tomb was built by his son Alauddin Alam Shah, in the year 1444as a tribute to him.The tomb is in octagonal shape, with many Hindu-style chhatris around the central dome, various arches and verandahs. The tomb of Mohammed Shah is clearly visible from the road, and is the first structure in the gardens. It is a good example of a combination of Hindu and Islamic style of architecture.
