The lotus temple, though a place of worship and meditation, is a popular tourist destination in New Delhi. The temple has enough room to accommodate approximately 1300 people inside its beautifully carved walls and a spectacular infrastructure.
You can pray to God, meditate, find peace and calm to connect with your spirituality. A trip to New Delhi is not complete without the Lotus temple as one of the visitor spots.
The temple’s architecture is what makes it so unique since it is built in the shape of a Lotus. The Lotus, itself, is a common symbol of many religions like Islam, Hinduism, Jainism, and even Buddhism.
Basic Information:
The Lotus Temple is the house of worship for Bahai but no one is restricted to come here and there is no visitor fee charged either. A wheelchair is provided for the differently-abled. You can see the entire structure of the temple, inside and outside within 45 minutes along with learning about its history and Bahai’s way of offering prayer.
The timing for special prayer inside the hall are: 10:00am, 12:00pm, 3:00pm and 5:00pm. The prayer is four-minute-long and prayer services are held four times throughout the day. The temple also has an information center that has many texts and videos on Bahai’s faith. The information center is open to adults but children below 12 years of age are not allowed. If you wish to take pictures, you must take permission from the administration. Volunteers are available at the gate to greet you and show you around the temple.
How to Reach:
By Air: Being the capital city, New Delhi is well connected with international flights and domestic flights. Domestic flights will take you to Palam Airport while international flights land at IGIA (India Gandhi International Airport)
By Rail: New Delhi has four major Railway stations that are well connected to various cities – Old Delhi Railway Station, New Delhi Railway Station, Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, and Anand Vihar Railway Station.
By Road: By road as well, Delhi is well connected to major cities and there is three major Inter-state bus Terminus in New Delhi.
After you reach Delhi, you can travel by Metro, auto-rickshaw, cabs or buses. The nearest Metro station to Lotus temple is Nehru Place Metro Station. From the metro station, it takes 15 minutes to reach the Lotus Temple on foot. You can also take a rickshaw, auto or get an Ola/Uber.
When to visit:
If you are looking for off-season budget travel, pick a month from April to September. But the best time to visit Delhi is from October to March. For visiting the Lotus temple, the timings are:
Winter: 9:00 am to 5:30 pm (Last Entry 5.00 pm) Winter months are October to March.
Summer: 9:00 am to 7:00 pm (Last Entry 6.30 pm) Summer months are April to September.
The timing of the information center is similar, only the information center closes 15 minutes before the temple. The temple and information center are closed on all Mondays.
History of Lotus Temple:
Another name for the Lotus Temple is Bahai’s Temple since the temple has its roots in the Bahai faith. The temple has been widely recognized and has gotten several awards for its unique architecture. The temple was constructed in November 1986 and during 2001, the number of visitors visiting Lotus Temple had exceeded the number of visitors who had gone to see the Taj Mahal and the Eiffel tower that year. Approximately 70 million people visited the Lotus temple in 2011. Even in contemporary times, 8000 to 10000 people visit the temple daily.
The architecture of the Lotus Temple:
The structure of the temple is made to function the same way a skylight functions. The dome is so spectacularly made that light enters the hall in the same way it enters an actual lotus flower, by passing through the petals.
The inside of the temple is a naturally quite cold in summers because the central hall is designed to act as a chimney. It has an opening at top and bottom so cool air passes over the pool in the basement ensuring a nice atmosphere.
The structure has 27 petals in total arranged in clusters of three. It has 9 marble sides and thus, nine doors open to the main hall. The architect of the Lotus temple was from Iran. Fariborz Sahba undertook the task to design and oversee the construction of the Lotus temple in 1976. Later on, the construction was undertaken by the ECC Construction Group of Larsen & Toubro Limited.
Our trip to Lotus Temple:
It is not that impossible to believe but despite belonging to Delhi, there are many popular places we hadn’t visited. Lotus temple is one of them. The architecture of the place is beautiful to admire from afar but its true beauty is in understanding how intricately it was built. Without air conditioning, the temple is cool naturally. We got some beautiful pictures of the structure from outside and bought posters from the cute little shops.
It is a great place to spend a quiet evening at and one gets surprised when one enters the temple how quiet and calm it truly is. We visited during one of the special prayers and got to hear the Bahai ritual of offering prayers. Despite Delhi being a city filled with noise and chatter, the Lotus Temple was the one place where it was so silent that we could almost hear the sound of our heartbeats. No matter how much one may explain it in words, the true feeling of why it is the place you must visit to find your spirituality will only be understood once you visit the place and feel the aura yourself.
You might need to stand in queues for a time because many visitors are wanting to see the mesmerizing temple and its nine pools. The pool area is the best place to click pictures along with the garden area surrounding the temple.
Durga Puja is here and we #ghoomophirosisters could not resist ourselves hopping the best pandals in Delhi. We understand this is more than a puja, in fact, its pure emotion. This is one festival when Bengalis across India goes into a frenzy and showcase their best in the form of pandals. whole of India the whole of Bengal goes into a frenzy with the coming of Mother Goddess, and there are a lot of emotions attached to this festival.
We are sure, watching this video will inspire you to drive to CR park definitely.
The whole affair starts with shopping for each day, and then with the coming of puja, it turns into a celebration like no other. On Saptami, we decided to start pandal hopping from C R Park which is famously the capital’s mini-Kolkata, where there were life-size pandals with different themes. Some pandal committees like to keep it traditional and very native, where-as others brought a sense of uniqueness to their idols and sculptures and over-all pandal.
The first one was at Kali Bari, the ground where all Durga idols are being made. Our timing was perfect, as they just started with Durga aarti. We can hear the dhakis and the conch shells which are integral to Durga Puja. The ground was filled with a lot of eateries and shopping items. On the menu for bhog, this year dishes which will include Bengali delicacy Khichuri made with Gobindo Bhog rice and Soona moong dal(from Kolkata), Beguni, Laabra( Mixed veg) Payesh, Veg chop, Fried rice, Aloo Gobi, Shahi paneer, Sweets, Halwa, etc. are being prepared.
Another pandal in Chittaranjan Park is by Cooperative Ground Durga Puja Samiti, which is celebrating its 44th year of the Durga Puja festival with the Theme – Commemorating the Birth Centenary of two Legends of Indian Music, Hemanta Mukherjee, and Manna Dey, showcasing their work and their immense contribution towards Indian Cinema, Art and Culture. This is one of the most award-winning pandals from CR park. We could also witness Dhunuchi Nritya at this pandal.
Then we moved to K Block.
Then we moved to P block, this was our spontaneous find, while we were going back to M block. The whole pandal was based on the bamboo theme. Most of the pandals are eco-friendly this year, as part of which an artificial pond has been made to immerse the idol. Cultural Nights are the main attractions of these Puja Pandals. The nearest metro station to reach CR park is GK M Block. Also, if you are driving, make sure, you park your cars at GK M Block.
Located in the Diplomatic enclave which is the heart of Delhi’s government and commercial precinct, Taj Hotel is spread across six acres of land. This luxury hotel is the ideal choice for travelers who wish to soak up the city’s history or businessmen hoping to spend a luxurious time.
Entrance: At first glance, we were mesmerized by the grand look of the hotel. It was no doubt very posh and the interiors were modern but what else can you expect from a five-star hotel? Upon entrance, we were greeted nicely by the staff and the lobby design was incredible.
Rooms:
The room was air-conditioned with an LED and a mini-bar. There was also an electric kettle. The bathroom was a real beauty with modern amenities and a bathtub along with a shower. The hairdryer was also present which shows how much they cared for our comfort. The room itself was very spacious and as luxurious as it could get. With beautiful interiors and walls with textured art, the room was a mixture of modern style with Indian art. With Indian coloured palette and motifs, we experienced swoon-worthy comfort in the huge comfy bed. There was a lot of space to move around and a fully stocked desk for any of our needs.
Tourist spots nearby:
The hotel is just a fifteen-minute drive away from the airport and 3.5 km away from Rashtrapati Bhavan. It is 6.4 km away from Jantar Mantar and India Gate as well. This makes it the perfect spot for stay for tourists. The location is one of the pros of living in the hotel since the views from the window are also charming. We were in the room with the garden view.
Dining:
There were three dining options. Masala Art was the restaurant serving delicious North Indian food and Orient express offered European cuisines. We alternated our lunch and dinner among the two and were impressed by the taste and quality of the food. Considering that it was a five-star hotel, of course, it was a bit expensive but the food was yummy with ample proportions. There was another option for Chinese food at Spicy Duck and it was equally good. Additionally, there was a tea lounge at the lobby that also served finger food. And at last, a blue bar for alcoholic beverages. The interiors of all the restaurants were fine and the service was extraordinary. There was also poolside private dining if you’re spending time with your partner.
Special Highlights:
The Jiva Grande Spa is something we have to specially mention because it was a mighty experience. With an assortment of massage therapies, relaxing facials and scrubs, we felt incredibly pampered and fresh. The hotel really focuses on your health as well as comfort. And the spa was the best in the city. There was also a salt sauna room.
With the gym room, swimming pool, golf clubs, there were plenty of things to entertain ourselves with. And the staff was always helpful and courteous. The personal butler service that Taj has going on really made us feel like VIPs
Address: Sardar Patel Marg, Diplomatic Enclave, New Delhi, India
Overall verdict:
The marvelous hospitality and luxury that Taj offers are one of a kind. They go above and beyond to make you feel at home and it is a wonderfully memorable experience. This is a fine establishment with all the qualities that you want in a hotel. So the next time you are in Delhi, you know where to go.
Lodi Garden is one of the most beautiful parks in New Delhi. It is located between Khan Market and Safdarjung’s Tomb on Lodi Road. Lodi Garden is spread over 90 acres and has monuments of Mohammed Shah’s Tomb, Sikander Lodi’s Tomb, Sheesh Gumbad and Bara Gumbad.
It is landscaped with grass, flowers, and lakes, and is a hotspot for morning walks. Yoga classes are organized every morning in the park. The view from the middle of the bridge is captivating, especially on a bright sunny day, when the fountain is in full swing and one is lucky to see a rainbow.
The tomb of Mohammed Shah was built in 1444 by Ala-ud-din Alam Shah. Bara Gumbad and Sheesh Gumbad were built in 1494 during the rule of Sikander Lodi. Another tomb of Sikander Lodi, which is very similar to Mohammed Shah’s tomb, was built by his own son Ibrahim Lodi in 1517.
Lodi Dynasty ruled over several parts of North India in the 16th century, before the Mughal Dynasty came into force. They were not as popular as the Mughal Dynasty, but they left bits of their legacy in Delhi, Lodi Gardens being one of them.
After the Sayyid and Lodi dynasties, two villages grew around the monuments, but in 1936, the villagers were relocated in order to make the gardens. During the British Raj, it was landscaped by Lady Willingdon, and hence the garden was named as ‘Lady Willingdon Park’ in 1936. After Independence in 1947, it was given its present name, Lodi Gardens.
In the middle of the garden is the Bada Gumbad (big dome), which is a gateway to a mosque. Both the Bada Gumbad and the mosque were built in 1494, when Sikander Lodi was the ruler. The mosque is extremely captivating. It has three domes, an arched doorway and some beautiful-looking inscriptions on them.
Opposite to the Bada Gumbad is the Sheesh Gumbad (the glass dome), which carries the remains of an unknown family. The Sheesh Gumbad is covered with ceramic tiles, which glitter like piece of glasses when the rays of sun fall on them, giving the Sheesh Gumbad its name.
There are remains of a watercourse in the garden which connects the Yamuna River to the Tomb of Sikandar Lodi. Nearby Sikander’s tomb is the Athpula (“Eight Piered”) Bridge which was built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar. It has seven arches, amongst which the central one is the largest.
Muhammed Shah, the last ruler of the Sayyid dynasty, which was in force in Delhi before the Lodis came to power, was buried in the Lodi Garden. His tomb was built by his son Alauddin Alam Shah, in the year 1444as a tribute to him.The tomb is in octagonal shape, with many Hindu-style chhatris around the central dome, various arches and verandahs. The tomb of Mohammed Shah is clearly visible from the road, and is the first structure in the gardens. It is a good example of a combination of Hindu and Islamic style of architecture.
Pizza Express is conveniently located on the third floor of Ambience Mall. Moving up the elevator, it is the first restaurant you’ll see. We went there one Sunday afternoon and though there were many places to dine nearby, we decided to give Pizza Express a try, because we love pizza. And honestly, who doesn’t? The place provides you with the familiarity of Pizza but with unique artisanal styles and a variety of toppings. Though, you should interact with your server about how it tastes so you don’t end up ordering the wrong thing. Ambiance: The place is so spacious and beautiful during daytime with great lights and hanging birds on top. We were given a warm welcome on our arrival and escorted to our table. We got to see the pizza being baked before we were served. It is a nice place for a casual hang-out with friends.
Menu: There are many options for crusts and toppings available. Though the options for non-vegetarians are wider than those of the vegetarians, we decided to give them both a try. And apart from Pizzas, they offer other Italian cuisines as well. There were options for Pasta, Lasagna, Dough balls and one can’t help but order cheesecake for desert. The Menu is well classified and there is the good range of options.
Food: The mushroom and Emilgrana dip with dough balls made way for our taste buds to start tingling. The Melazante piccante is a must try pizza for everyone who visits. It is a beautifully baked pizza with the abundance of mozzarella, spicy marinated aubergines, and jalapeno. It is just the right amount of cheesy and crunchy. We also ordered ‘The American’ and garlic bread. The American Pizza was an 11-inch pizza that gets you your money’s value and is light on the stomach but Piccante was the highlight of that dining experience. The garlic bread was warm and buttery and by that time we were already filled. Yet, we ordered the dessert anyway. Glad that we did because the cheesecake was heavenly. So smooth on your tongue and the texture is amazing. We had ordered a gin and tonic which was expensive yet tasted totally random. So the beverages are not recommended but it is the best place for Italian food. The thin crust pizza and dough balls are highly recommended.
Highlights: The staff is really helpful and nice. They greet you with a warm smile as soon as you enter. Melzante Piccante Pizza is something I would love to go back for. If you go to Pizza Express, surely try this. There are happy hours for getting a free drink on the order of one and special discounts on group dining.
Verdict: Everything we tried was delicious and we really had no complaints. The place is a little expensive but all good things are. So, the next time we start craving Pizzas and hope to make a small dent in our pockets, we know where to go. We’ll give it a total of 4 out of 5 stars.
Address: T-303B, 3rd Floor, Ambience Mall, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi Going Again: We have yet to try other dishes on their menu like the Apollo Pizza, Tomato Pesto, Ginger Fresca and for that, we will be going there again.
Cost: ₹2,000 for two people (approx.) and ₹230 for a pint of beer (approx.) They accept cash and cards.
If there was one name in the whole wide world that is constantly associated with the best pizzas, it would be Jamie Oliver. After the renowned chef started his chain in almost all the big cities all over the world, he arrived in India with some great recipes in Pizzas among other Italian dishes. Jamie’s Pizzeria, the UK-based international food chain is located in the Ambience Mall, Vasantkunj and is listed among the best pizza places in the city and around. The casual dining place opens up at 11 every morning and remains open until 11 at night.
The specialty about the place is the pizza base. A truly delicious pizza is if you can eat the base even if it has no vegetables on it and the base stands up to the pizza test very well well adding a new and delicious dimension to the pizza experience. The cost for two people is approximately Rs.800 that sounds pretty reasonable and comes without burning a hole in your pocket.
Ambience
The restaurant is located over a massive area of about 1000 square feet and provides an ample space to deal with a lot of customers at the very same time. The menu items are written on the blackboards from where you can order whatever you like. As you enter the Jamie Oliver’s first India venture, you can experience a warm ambience with buttery light and family-style tables. The place has retro styled tomato-red seats with a leather strap that represents both the friendliness and toughness that the Naked Chef is known for. All pizza lovers must surely check out the open kitchen concept where soft, doughy handkerchiefs are tossed into the air and a variety of pizzas are born and brought to your plate. We had a great time watching the delightful dough show. The beautiful hostess with shining yellow hair walks around and serves you the lovingly made pizzas with a welcoming smile.
Cuisine
Coming to the cuisines, the place is a must stopover for a variety of Pizzas and other Italian food items. And believe us when we say this, not many people are acquainted with Oliver’s magic. If you are an ardent pizza lover, there is no way in the world that you should miss the experience of dining at the place and have one of those amazing pizzas that they serve.
The Ginger beer and litchi juice were the first things we had and we didn’t regret. They were amazing, to begin with followed by some hand-stretched garlic bread with rosemary & an olive tapenade which warmed us up perfectly well before the pizza arrived. We ordered red rocket pizza which is a blend of tomatoes, mozzarella, rocket, and olives, cheddar and veg parmesan. The crunchy taste stayed in our mouths for a long time. The pizza was followed by desserts in form of ice cream and brownie. In the end, it was a perfect amalgamation of taste and aroma.
Highlights
Wine and ice cold beer are served to those who want to start or end the meal with some alcohol. The bar is amazing and beautiful to look at. The Italian essence you feel upon entering the place is one other major highlight of Jamie’s Pizzeria.
Jamie’s Pizzeria is for the die-hard pizza lovers who are not a big fan of American style pizzas and want to try the actual Italian flavors, the pizza recipes by famous Jamie Oliver.

Occupies 6 acres of land which was salvaged by a land reclamation project.
Craftsmen who are registered with D.C.Handicrafts are eligible to find aØ place here.

Festivals and events are held throughout the year in this place which also retains its rural look and feel.
People love the diversity of food at INA and some are regular to the place for the food & sight- seeing.
All the three Dilli Haats are administered centrally with DTTDC inviting bids for tendering stalls and exhibitions.
Stalls are only allotted to vendors selling ware created in cottage industries or by individual craftsmen/artists.
These have to be either handmade or created using traditional handlooms or casts.
Sometimes foreigners bargain too much for authentic and exclusive fabrics like Pashmina because of the image that ‘Indian sellers fleece foreigners’.
Cleanliness and ambiance of INA were appreciated by all.
Now I guess I have the right to say- if you are still untouched with the ambiance of Dilli Haat, you are missing out something.
Amour Bistro located in New Delhi is one of those classy places that don’t boast off a complex and massive menu card. Tucked away safely in the leafy climate of a sweet and tiny Malcha Marg in Chanakyapuri, the place has always been successfully attracting the classiest of people who have overtime become their regular customers. All thanks to the impeccable services and class that oozes out of every corner of the little place. It doesn’t really believe in showing off, it sticks so the modern European style of cooking and seeing the crowd here, we could assume that it sets well with the locales in a great way.
The timings of the restaurants are between 8 AM to 12 PM everyday and given the classiness of the place, it could be little heavy on your pocket. The average cost for two people enjoying their food at the place is about INR 3000. But it’s all definitely worth it.
Decor
Also open for the breakfast, the overall interior of the place is quite rustic and down to earth. The place has been made in such a way that it reminds you of a small country side cafe adorned with flowers. The interiors decoration is classy and people having a slightly above average artistic inclinations will find Amour more appealing. Empty wine bottles, coarse wooden furniture and the slight dash of greenery makes the place justifying its name, which is a French word for Love. The ambience is further romanticized by the aroma of fresh cheese and flowers, making it a perfect spot for dating and romantic getaways for an evening. With the wood furnishing and dim lighting, your experience will always be a romantic one. You can also try the open sitting and enjoy the lake view if the weather is pleasant.
Food
Taking the European food culture to a whole new level, Amour seems to be trying to introduce Indians to how the food culture goes back in Europe, especially France. The charred mushrooms, which we found out on the menu, were just as we expected, delicious as hell. It was served with spring onions, broccoli, and condensed tomatoes. That, along with the garlic bread melted in our mouths and provided our taste buds with an experience that would stay in there for a very long time. We also ordered the Crostini Bread for starters which made a really nice sharing starter.
Along with that, the salads are intoxicating as well. Green beans salad with broccoli and lettuce was mind blasting and despite being a pure vegetarian dish, it didn’t let us down when it comes to the taste. Amaretto cake was what we had for the dessert and our meal finally was done in the most delicious way possible. In the end, we tried the soft and moreish Toffee Cake which served as a warm and comforting twist to the day.
Tip: For the ones not that acquainted with the European food, can ask the super friendly staff for help. They are helpful and could guide you through the different ingredients used in a particular meal.
Highlights
The restaurant chefs like to experiment a lot. There is inclusion of new dishes every few weeks and most of their tests are quite spot on. That gives out another reason to make a stop at Amour every few weeks.
Conclusion
The restaurant oozes out love from every small corner of it. Try it for a romantic getaway!
