Tips: As you Pack your Footwears for Upcoming Travel

Footwear is the most important part of travel packing checklist. It makes all the more sense to look for basic things while choosing your foot-wears especially when you are on a backpacking trip, as you would like to not only ensure comfort but also it should be trending. Based on our solo backpacking travel experience, #ghoomophophirosisters came out with few tips that one should keep in mind while doing footwear shopping.
Trendy
Footwears should be trendy enough that can go well with an evening dinner or for a morning walk or to your hiking trails. We still recall our early travel days, when we used to keep a different pair of shoes for different occasions, but over a period our travel checklist evolved and we started packing shoes that can go well with our clothing, are trendy, comfortable and carry off fashion and utility hand in hand. These footwears could be of any material from leather to nylon, but should look nice on our feet.
Airport-Friendly
There are airports, which would ask you to remove them for security check-in. While traveling, it is really required that your shoes should be X-ray friendly and should not have metal, because, at times, such shoes waste a lot of your time while clearing security. Sports shoes, loafers, open sandals are good examples of airport friendly shoes.

Quality of Sole
Having a great quality of sole that can survive your rough hiking terrain and your long travel walks is an important aspect of travel foot wears. All good reasons, one would not like to go through the pain of wear and tear of your foot wears at least.

Breathable
While you on travel, make sure, the footwears should have a breathable membrane to avoid bad odor. Open shoes, flip flops, does help here, but in case you are going for shoes, prefer high-quality membrane shoes.

Cushioning & Lightweight
Since travel involves loads of walking, it is absolutely a great idea to wear light weight and comfortable footwears. One should ensure that their shoes have good cushioning that can prevent the feet from blisters. Lightweight foot-wears not only helps in keeping the feet happy but also keep your baggage light, which in turn is a boon while you have to take up a flight.

Waterproof

In case you are traveling during monsoon, or on a hiking trip, It is advisable to have waterproof shoes. This not only help you to go with only one pair of shoes but also, improves the durability of your shoes. There are water- proof sprays available, which can be used as an alternate option.

We hope that next time whenever you traveling, you know what to keep and what to avoid. You may ask questions like how frequently a particular pair can be used, or can this be replaced by some other pair. As a traveler, you would like to weigh your options carefully.
Personally, we prefer Nike shoes or Woodland Shoes to sandals on our travels, though this may change depending on travel destinations, and activities planned in itinerary but our backpack usually has a pair of fashionable, technical trendy footwears.

Go travel to these Visa free countries

Everybody knows that getting a visa on an Indian passport can be a real pain. We all wish we could go on a vacation just like that, just pick a destination, plan a trip, pack our bags and simply go for it without any hassle. God, why is it not that easy!!

The process, in reality, requires first to look for options then choose a getaway based on the size of the hole it will burn in your pocket. By chance, if the chosen place is abroad then you have to apply for a visa and then the problem of obtaining it starts. Day in and day out you have to go to the visa office for various verification formalities.

So here are some places abroad where Indians can go to without getting a visa, and they will amaze you with their landscapes.

Bhutan

A visit to Bhutan, the land of happiness, from India requires just the payment of a certain amount of money. The perk of an Indian’s passport is that you pay a lesser amount as compared to people of other countries. While in the beautiful country, you get to explore the Switzerland of the East, visit the peaceful Tiger Monastery and relish the spicy local food. If you drive from India to Bhutan, you get an entry for 7 days without a passport and if you fly to the place, you get an entry for 1 month. Both of them are extendable, though.

Ecuador

Ecuador which is considered as the equatorial paradise of South America can be toured by the holder of an Indian passport without getting a visa from beforehand. It is the place to behold and enjoy in the vast Amazon rain forests, the sensational beaches, the Andes Mountains, the isolated Galapagos islands and the world’s highest capital city of Quito. Indians get free visas if they show valid return tickets or the visas of any other place that they plan to visit from Ecuador.

Antarctica

Being the last land on the earth, it is a place for people who want to see mighty glaciers, icy white landscapes and plenty of penguins. It may be the only place on the planet where there is minimal human involvement and boasts of untouched natural beauty. You can go to Antarctica via the USA, Argentina, Chile, South Africa and New Zealand. Since it is uninhabited, there is no visa regime for visiting it.

El Salvador

With an insane number of volcanoes, El Salvador is amongst the smallest countries in Central America. The tropical paradise has hospitable people along with a diverse culture, natural beauty, beaches, volcanoes, lip- smacking food, nightlife and much more to offer to its visitors. Indian citizens get a free visa for a maximum of 3 months, depending on the show a valid return ticket or a valid visa for the next destination.

Fiji

The honeymooners’ destination Fiji is a coral paradise of South Pacific. Imagine yourself flopping on a beach sipping Pinacoladas and relaxing with your family or going scuba diving in the exquisite coral reefs and enjoying the natural beauty under the sea. Indians can get a free visa for 4 months if they show a valid return ticket and have sufficient funds for their stay.

Hong Kong

The amazing skyline, the awesome shopping venues, the delicious Cantonese food and the fact that it is nearest to the gambling hub of Macau make Hong Kong one of the most favourite spots for Indian tourists. They can get a free visa for 14 days after showing a valid return ticket with sufficient funds for the stay and a valid hotel booking.

Macau

It is the place where you can go to try your luck at Blackjack, Poker or SOT machines. It is also the place to witness rich Portuguese history and relish Portuguese food. Indians do get a free visa for up to 30 days on showing valid return tickets with sufficient funds to cover their trip.

Mauritius

Mauritius  is one of Indian Ocean’s top holiday spots. Its water sports and scuba diving spots are amazing. If you are planning for a relaxed beach vacation, this is the perfect spot. Here you will find a mixed culture of Indians, French and Africans. Indians can stay here visa- free for a minimum of 90 days and a maximum of 180 days on the condition of showing a valid return ticket along with sufficient funds for their trip.

Nepal

India shares its border with Nepal which means you can drive, ride or fly into the country. Indians do not even need a passport for the purpose; having a voter’s ID card or a driving license is sufficient. You can go to Nepal to trek or to visit the Buddhist temples or to enjoy the beauty of its capital city Kathmandu. As mentioned above Indians don’t need a visa, they can visit Nepal with a valid voters ID card or driving license. Also, they can stay and work there for 6 months.

#ghoomophirosisters Packing List

We usually keep getting the request to share our packing tips from naïve and pro solo travelers. This blog typically talks about packing details while we are on the road. Happy Reading! as we as #ghoomophirosisters understand that packing right stuff is very important and is challenging too for solo backpacking females.

Every time we travel, we discuss a lot on what need to be taken and what needs to be left behind, and over the 8 years of journey, we realized our bags are getting lighter and lighter.

Here you go!!

Bag or Day Pack – Apart from your backpacks, don’t miss to carry a small sling bag/day pack. This helps to keep the small stuff like sunscreesn/lip balms, shades, watch, one pair of clothes, water bottle, wallet etc within reach,

Travel Documents: Don’t miss to carry important documents like passport, requisite visas, extra photos, local currency, health insurance, traveler cheques, local guide book, emergency numbers. These all can be accommodated in your day bag.

Travel Clothes: Wrinkle-free washable pants/trousers (with a zipper to turn them into shorts and preferably with plenty of pockets) – we stay away from jeans in the tropics: they stay wet forever (if you’re traveling in cities, jeans are perfect if that’s what you usually wear),  wrinkle-free washable blouses (one short and one long sleeves), pair socks (get special walking socks, not cotton ones)1 pair hiking sandals (for beach, town, and shower) or walking shoes. Cold weather clothes, a lightweight fleece jacket – or something warmer if you’re heading where it’s really freezing. Large plastic poncho or lightweight waterproof (carrying an umbrella can be cumbersome). Some scarves, and other accessories that can be mix and matched.

Personal Items: Nail clippers, Small bottle of antibacterial soap ,Small tube of moisturizing cream or lotion, comb or hairbrush, Toothpaste, toothbrush, Viscose or microfiber travel towel , Deodorant or talcum powder, Hair clip or barrette (if you have long hair), Eye mask and ear plugs, Eyeglasses, contact lenses and supplies, Sunglasses, sunscreen. Wristwatch with an   alarm function (Fastrack has come out with real swanky collection), small candles and waterproof matches, toilet papers, sanitizers, mosquito repellent.

Getting Technical: a small LED, plus a headlamp , Individual country plug adapters , Pens , A small penknife or Swiss Army , Cell phone/phone cards/charger (make sure you pack it in something waterproof).

Travel Money belt, First aid kit, and your credit cards are other things which you would not like to miss.!!

Go pack and travel!!

Explore the Unexplored Delhi with Team Ghoomophiro

When talking of Delhi’s historical monuments, in the first instance, India Gate, Jama Masjid, Jantar Mantar, Humayun’s tomb, Red fort and Qutab Minar are probably the names that strike every Indian’s mind. Because of their antiquity and marvelous architecture, they have been attracting tourists from all over the world who visit the capital city. Seldom do people realize that there is more to Delhi than this; there are more historical places of the visit than these conventional ones. Unnoticed by the common public yet beautiful and serene, it is apt to call such esoteric monuments- ‘The hidden treasures of Delhi’. Some of them are as follows.

Rajon ki Baoli: A grand stepwell located in the Mehrauli Archaeological Park, Rajon ki Baoli is a perfect escape from the hustle- bustle of the city. Its prettiness and impressive isolation make one feel closer to the era it was built in.

Sabz Burj: Built at the intersection of the Lodi and Mathura roads, near Humayun’s Tomb, the mysterious Sabz Burj is a blue-domed tomb despite its literal meaning, green tower (apparently due to a restoration blunder). The purpose for which it was built is still unknown but an interesting fact is that it was used as a Police Station during the British rule. Entry is prohibited but one can take a proper glance at it from outside the fences circumscribing it.

Arab Sarai: It was built by Humayun’s widow, Haji Begum to accommodate 300 Arab priests whom she brought back from her pilgrimage to Mecca. It is a big rest house. Only its Northern wall is in a decent condition while all the cells are in a dilapidated state now.

Zeenat-ul-Masjid:This mosque is located to the south of the Red fort and was built by Aurangzeb’s daughter, Zeenat ul Nissa. It looks like a miniature form of Jama Masjid. Zeenat-ul-Masjid literally means ‘Ornament of Mosques’ and the monument truly lives up to its name.

Zafar Mahal:This is the last monument built in the Mughal period by Akbar Shah II. Bahadur Shah Zafar II wanted to be buried there but unfortunately died in exile in Rangoon. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has suggested  setting up a Mughal Museum in the palace to encourage visitors and remove the current encroachments that have taken place.

Atgah Khan’s Tomb:

Atgah Khan was Akbar’s foster father and was murdered by Akbar’s foster brother, Adham Khan. Located in the heart of Central Delhi’s Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti, the tomb is obscured by brick shacks. It is one of the most splendid creations of the Mughal period. One comes across this structure while visiting the Daragh of Hazrat Nizamuddin but unfortunately does not know what it is.

Apart from the six aforementioned historical monuments in Delhi, there are other ones also, plenty in number, which crave attention today. It is upsetting to see the heritage of our rich past being ignored carelessly. Begumpur mosque, Bijai mandal, Dareeba khurd, Qila Rai Pithora, Tomb and Mosque of Isa Khan, Adam khan’s tomb and the list goes on and on…

Discovering the Picturesque Pichavaram – Second largest mangrove forest in world .

We all are aware of the largest mangrove jungle is Sunderbans delta, but very few are aware that second largest also lies in India, which is based out in lesser known areas of Tamil Nadu and is known as Pichavaram. It is spread over 3000 acres and has around 4500 big small canals, which are sun-flecked tunnels of roots and branches and some are dense to the extent that they hardly leave any space for even sunlight to pass through.

These plants together have made the place so exquisite with their viviparous roots and aerial roots. These roots are so very strong and they are in fact used to steer the boat at times instead of using the paddles.

How to reach there:  Pichavaram is just 30 minutes’ drive from Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu and around 250Kms from Chennai via East Coast Road.  The drive through ECR is beautiful, as it gives you a glimpse of the coastal culture wherein you can find paddy fields, females selling fishes, traditional houses.

You can take both paddle boats and motor boats, which are operated by the Tamil Nadu tourism department. They run on all days from 9 AM to 6 PM. watching the sunset is always scenic in these forests. What makes more fascinating is the stories, legends that boatmen will continue while they are rowing the boats. These stories range from movie shoots to religious legends attached to the place.

Quick Tips

  • Take sufficient cash, as there are no ATMs in the place.
  • Plastic is banned
  • Use paddle boats rather than motor boats, as they can reach to more interiors
  • If you would want to check the breadth and height of these beautiful forests, tipping the boatmen is not a bad idea. Afterall, they are the masters of the place.
