Amour gets brownie points for its ambience and the art of presenting food with love

Amour Bistro located in New Delhi is one of those classy places that don’t boast off a complex and massive menu card.  Tucked away safely in the leafy climate of a sweet and tiny Malcha Marg in Chanakyapuri, the place has always been successfully attracting the classiest of people who have overtime become their regular customers. All thanks to the impeccable services and class that oozes out of every corner of the little place. It doesn’t really believe in showing off, it sticks so the modern European style of cooking and seeing the crowd here, we could assume that it sets well with the locales in a great way.

The timings of the restaurants are between 8 AM to 12 PM everyday and given the classiness of the place, it could be little heavy on your pocket. The average cost for two people enjoying their food at the place is about INR 3000. But it’s all definitely worth it.

Decor

Also open for the breakfast, the overall interior of the place is quite rustic and down to earth. The place has been made in such a way that it reminds you of a small country side cafe adorned with flowers. The interiors decoration is classy and people having a slightly above average artistic inclinations will find Amour more appealing. Empty wine bottles, coarse wooden furniture and the slight dash of greenery makes the place justifying its name, which is a French word for Love. The ambience is further romanticized by the aroma of fresh cheese and flowers, making it a perfect spot for dating and romantic getaways for an evening. With the wood furnishing and dim lighting, your experience will always be a romantic one. You can also try the open sitting and enjoy the lake view if the weather is pleasant.

Food

Taking the European food culture to a whole new level, Amour seems to be trying to introduce Indians to how the food culture goes back in Europe, especially France. The charred mushrooms, which we found out on the menu, were just as we expected, delicious as hell. It was served with spring onions, broccoli, and condensed tomatoes. That, along with the garlic bread melted in our mouths and provided our taste buds with an experience that would stay in there for a very long time. We also ordered the Crostini Bread for starters which made a really nice sharing starter.

Along with that, the salads are intoxicating as well. Green beans salad with broccoli and lettuce was mind blasting and despite being a pure vegetarian dish, it didn’t let us down when it comes to the taste. Amaretto cake was what we had for the dessert and our meal finally was done in the most delicious way possible. In the end, we tried the soft and moreish Toffee Cake which served as a warm and comforting twist to the day.

Tip: For the ones not that acquainted with the European food, can ask the super friendly staff for help. They are helpful and could guide you through the different ingredients used in a particular meal.

Highlights

The restaurant chefs like to experiment a lot. There is inclusion of new dishes every few weeks and most of their tests are quite spot on. That gives out another reason to make a stop at Amour every few weeks.

Conclusion

The restaurant oozes out love from every small corner of it. Try it for a romantic getaway!

Big Chill reminds you of the glorious days of Hollywood

Although, Big Chill, being a successful cafe chain that it is, has opened up quite a lot of outlets in Delhi alone, the one in Khan Market happens to be the most popular ones. It’s different from the rest and makes for an amazing treat to your senses. Big Chill Khan Market makes for the most amazing place for people who crave for casual western food. The film poster plastered bistro is infinitely amazing and the pasta is deliciously hearty.

The place is located in the crowded Khan Market and other major places. INR 700 is the average cost per person.

Ambience

Well, the theme of the restaurant is not very unique internationally, but talking about Delhi, it would be almost impossible to find a place like this. The walls are full of some classic old and new Hollywood films. The owners of the place do seem to be great Hollywood buffs. It would be a treat to the ardent fans of the American cinema as it would be a fun thing to spot your favorite classics over the innumerable posters. The tables and the chairs are comfortable to sit in. Although what attracted me the most, personally, was the lighting inside the place, which may seem normal to most, but being a film buff, I am pretty sure they are modeled on the neo-noir classics from the golden era of Hollywood. Maybe, the place takes me to the era itself, but that is what I honestly felt. Overall, the beautiful brick-laid, green interiors and prettily framed movie posters of yesteryears right from Casablanca to Hitchcock’s Psycho to James Bond bring all the charm to this place.

Food

For the ones who don’t know much about the impossibly huge menu items in general, it may take them about half an hour to decide what to eat. The place deals mostly in the continental, Italian and European cuisines. Out of the diverse options, we had, the ones that instantly became our favorites were Garlic Bread with cheese, four season pizza, and the exquisitely amazing pasta.

Talking about the beverages, if you happen to be here some time, never forget to try Banana smoothie, it is something to die for. Brownie shake and hot chocolate also are amazing per say, but the banana smoothie will take you to another level of taste.

The desserts served here seem to have more options than the actual menu. Of all of them, the specific ones which we loved were waffles, blueberry cheesecake, and oreo cheesecake.

Highlights

The place is a perfect destination for the pizza and creamy pasta lovers and that is the biggest highlight in itself. There are no other places in Khan Market that come even nearby to Big Chill when it comes to that.

Big Chill is now a reputed name that is synonymous with quality, efficiency, taste and more than that, trustworthiness. This is what has earned the place a loyal customer base. Very few places serve your taste buds the way Big Chill does. So, grab your friends and head to this splendid place.

Dirang Monpa, one of the major tribes of the Monpas

The Dirang Monpas are identified as the major division of the greater Monpa Tribe belonging to Tibeto – Burman language family. These tribal people are Tibetan Buddhist and inhabit the north eastern area of India. The Dirang Monpa tribe has been granted the scheduled tribe status in India. During the 1981 census, their total population was 3599, which crossed 5000 in one decade’s time.

The other name used commonly for the Diran Monpa tribe is Tsangla, which suggests that these people are maybe in some aspect, related to Tsangla tribes of Bhutan, China and India, which numbers more than 250,000 people. But when it comes to the language spoken, the difference is vast. A research has been taking place in order to determine the relationship between the two ancient tribes.

History

In India, for the most part, the Dirang Monpa people inhabit the Dirang circle which happens to be located in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh. The tribal people claim that they are the very first people who inhabited the area which takes their origin to a thousand years back. Some of their elders reveal that their forefathers originated primarily in Bhutan and they moved to India later when their native land was constantly being bombarded by the outside invasions.

Customs

When it comes to cuisines, the Monpa people survive majorly on cereals, fish, vegetables, chuung, rice, maize and wheat. Maize happens to be their staple item food. When it comes to meat, they are known to consume everything from beef, pork, mutton, yaks and mithuns to deers and in some areas, there are tribal people who eat snake as well. Bananas, apples and peaches are the fruits most consumed by them.

To perform the marriage rituals, a lama gets hired in order to consult the horoscopes and determine the most auspicious time and day for the marriage to take place. On the day of marriage, the family of the bride moves to groom’s house. The marriage is considered as a simple procedure where a lama simply places a white scarf called Katha around the necks of the bride and groom, showers blessings on the couple and in no time, the marriage formalities are completed. A huge feast is held after marriage at which all the people, including children, often become indulge in consuming copious amounts of strong rice whisky.

Lamas play many other roles as well. When a woman gives birth to a child, she is considered to be in a state of spiritual and physical pollution and nobody is allowed to visit her. On the third day, a lama is invited to name the child and prepare a horoscope for the baby. The lamas are not only present at birth, but they also carry out the funerals. When there is a death in this tribe family, ‘the body is carried to a nearby river and thrown into the water after being cut into 108 pieces as Tibetan Buddhists consider 108 to be an auspicious number. The lamas recite a prayer and on the seventh day, a tree gets erected in front of the house of the deceased to satisfy the soul.

Religion

Tibetan Buddhism has the greatest influence on the Dirang Monpa tribes. At the time of the 1981 census, 99.69 per cent of the Dirang Monpa expressed their belief in Buddhism. The previous Indian census, in 1971, had returned 100 per cent of the Dirang Monpa as Buddhists.

Culture / Belief

The Dirang Monpas feel that the caste Hindus are superior to them, while the Lish Monpas, But Monpas and Mijis are considered inferior.

Occupation

Agriculture is the chief occupation. The people practice both jhum(shifting cultivation) and settled cultivation and also domesticate yaks, cows, sheeps, pigs etc. The cattles and yak are reared for milk and meat, while the sheep is credited for producing wool and meat.

Conclusion

Northeast India boasts of incredible linguistic and cultural diversity out of which the Monpa tribes make up for five percent of the total population of tribal communities spanning the whole Arunachal Pradesh. These tribes are known for their own and unique system of the practices. The tribes are also famous for their artistic creations that include beautiful Thangka painting, carpet making, weaving, and wood carving.

The spectacular Nelong Valley is another Ladakh for tourists

The one place in Uttarakhand that remains untouched from the interference of human race is Nelong Valley. Also known as the Leh-Ladakh of Uttarakhand, the place is located near the Indian China border and offers some of the best picturesque visuals to the beauty seeking tourists. Due to the heavy segregation, the place looks more like a desert and while it must be brimming with the chaos of the tourists, it remains silent for the most part of the year.

How to reach

The nearest airport to the valley is Jolley Grant airport which happens to be located at about a distance of 380 kilometres from the valley and you then have to take a bus or hire a taxi that will bring you here in about 5 hours. The place is well connected by roads to Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradoon. So travelling to the valley shall not be difficult.

About the place

The virgin natural beauty of the place has compelled more and more tourists to come visit the place and as a result, the tourism has begun to rise in the beautiful valley. Located at an altitude of about 11,000 feet above the sea level, the valley looks like a snow desert, much like Leh Ladakh. And as a result, Nelong valley is slowly becoming to be the best alternative for the tourists looking to visit the hard and unbearably cold terrains of Leh Ladakh.

Along with the charming landscapes, with the pure natural beauty all around, the valley also houses some of the rarest and exquisite wild animals such as snow leopard, the musk deer, and Himalayan blue deer. The lucky tourists can easily get a glimpse of these animals every now and then, in case they pay proper attention to the surroundings.

Road trips are quite popular to the valley, much like the Leh Ladakh trips that the youngsters have become accustomed to. The recommended period to stay in the place is about a day as in that time, you would see almost everything the valley has to offer in terms of the snow capped mountain peaks, delicious flora and fauna, the wilderness in their pure natural habitat among other things.

Best time to visit

Winters are the worst time to come to the place, so the tourism board of the state recommends that the place must only be visited only between the months of May-November. Although, being a politically significant place, the government has allowed only a limited number of vehicles to enter the valley.

Travel tips

-The tourists can not bring their personal vehicles inside the valley. The forest vehicles, total six in numbers will bring you here.

-The valley is available for the sightseeing by the Indian tourists exclusively, due to its closeness with the Indo-China border.

The tourists will need to go through a fitness test before entering the valley.

The strict laws imposed by the government are one of the main reasons for the place being deserted to a large extent. But despite all that, the place remains as beautiful as a place can be and the increasing number of tourists per year is quite hopeful.

Bandung-The perfect love for nature starts here

Bandung is the capital city of West Java, and the third largest city in Indonesia after Jakarta and Surabaya. The city is nicknamed as Kota Kembang, literally meaning the Flower City since Bandung used to have flowers in abundance. Visitors can take a flight to Bandung from the major cities of Indonesia and can get to Bandung by plane through Bandung Husein Sastranegara Airport.

All full of the volcanoes and the craters formed due to the years of existence, the Bandung city is a bittersweet mixture. The other side of the city belongs to the wildly beautiful green landscapes, the tea plantations, and the beautiful people all around. The city is known locally to be among the most beautiful cities in the country along with being known as the third largest city in Indonesia. The people here are all cultured and elegant. Winters are especially suitable to visit the place. The chilly wind will give you goosebumps as you move forward to explore more of the city with your naked eyes.

Here are some reasons why one must never miss a trip to the place whenever they can-

Have a walk into the live crater- This experience is something really uncalled for, but once you have it, you feel the electricity running through your nerves. Tankuban Perahu is the name of the volcano located at closer to the city of Bandung. Up on the crater, there are ample stores where you can buy the artifacts to make the journey more memorable. The white smoke constantly erupting out of it may be frightening to you but also is a fascinating feeling. Don’t miss that at any cost!

See Dusun Bambu- The very relaxing park at the feet of the mountain is a very happy go lucky kind of place. The picturesque valleys around the park compel you to just lie down and stare at them for hours. And if the soft music is on, you want nothing else. The valleys all around echo peace and tranquillity and this must be the last place before you take off from the city.

Food at the Peak- This one restaurant is the most famous one in the city and the most favorite one of the tourists. All the national cuisines along with the popular international ones are served here in all their deliciousness. The live bands play music as you sit in the beautifully lit place along with your loved ones enjoying the fascinating food and drinks.

Witness the Saung Angklung Udjo show- The happiest place in the entire city is this! The Angklung is a local musical instrument made of bamboo and produces some great sounds which are enchanting and seductive for the ones listening to them for the first time. The music show takes place almost every day and everyone should visit it once at-least.

Kawah Putih- Literally translated as White Crater, Kawah Putih is one of the most interesting things about the city that may be the sole reason to visit the place. The land engulfed in whiteness is surrounded by the beautiful natural landscapes and opens all the senses. From the beautiful lake to the photogenic trees surrounding the area, the place is just perfect.

These are enough reasons to give the Indonesian city of Bandung a try. Indonesia may not be a very popular destination at present, but the land of volcanoes is still one of the most photogenic Asian countries to not miss.
