The Art of Negotiating in India

The Indian market has its own taste of shopping. Just like the diversity of Indian culture, diversity is prevalent in shopping experiences too. You may never feel satisfied even after you have negotiated enough with the shopkeeper. It may seem to you later- “Oh! I could have got this at a lower price”. This is because the product price that they quote in the beginning may be 2x, 4x or even 8x.

They may sense your know-how about the product and its quality (what they generally excuse at) and your willingness to buy that product. You have to possess a good negotiating skill to be a perfectly happy customer. There are certain things that you need to be cautious about to be a smart customer. Don’t get too excited over seeing a product or at least a seller should not be aware of your interest. Keep your attitude casual as if you are just checking it out like the normal ones. When you are asking for a price, try to judge his mind especially if you have no idea of the actual prices.

  1. Try to give a look as if the prices he quoted sounds crazy. The seller would start to lower the price and you should wait to let him go as low as possible. Now it’s your turn to start negotiating (Note that you have not negotiated yet). Try negotiating as much as you can. After you are done with it, ask him smartly- “What is your best price now”? This leaves a scope for further negotiation if still left any. You can even try to walk off just to show him and get a better price.
  2. Buy as much as you can as they can offer you even less for high quantity. When buying in bulk, still adopt the same strategy of negotiating with a single quantity. Now ask him what more discounts he can offer if you buy in bulk. You can also play on round off figures after the total in 50’s and 100’s. 😛
  3. “Don’t shy away from negotiating”. They are looking for those ignoramus people who can pay them the higher price. It’s like they are demanding prices to laugh on you at your back. They don’t feel bad selling it at very high prices, then why should you care about what people will think if you start negotiating.
  4. Remember don’t appoint this negotiating style everywhere. Firstly encounter that the shop is not a fixed price shop. It may help you to avoid unnecessary bargaining at certain places like restaurants, ice cream parlors, stationery, etc.
  5. If you are a regular visitor to a shop, and he offers you a great deal, you can offer them to keep the change to let them know that you appreciated it.

Where to Bargain?

For the best bargains, visit Brigade Road and MG Road in Bangalore. Also, bargaining is a common sight at the New Market in Kolkata, Sarojini Nagar Market, Lajpat Nagar Main Market and Karol Bagh market in New Delhi.

So unless you a have a lot of money to spare refrain from paying the price the seller asks for the first time. Haggling is a common practice in a country like India and permitted even at shops flaunting “No Bargaining” sign. So learn the art of bargaining soon and shop till you drop!

(a)    Keep yourself hydrated by drinking liquids such as water and juice. Do not drink heavier liquids or something extremely sweet. Alcoholic beverages are also a BIG NO.

(c)    Keep your eyes on the horizon and not on moving objects because that can cause Vertigo.

Prescription:

Consult your doctor before going on the trip and ask if you need a change in medication for your travel plans. Keep your medication as well as prescription or a letter from the doctor with you at all times. This will help you get through customs as well as get the right treatment in the worst situation in the place where you travel to. Take your pills half an hour before traveling. Also, take enough medicine to last you for the span of the trip.

Insurance:

Get yourself insurance with a good Health insurance and Travel insurance plan preferably one with Vertigo in the plans. It is important if you have a medical condition and can be a great help in assuring that you will get the necessary medical help if needed. It tells you about the correct postures in situations which manage your body equilibrium and thus prevents vertigo symptoms. While I can be really helpful during travel, you can also use it daily to manage your vertigo.

Click pictures from your smartphone like a pro in few easy tips

Before the era of the smart phones dawned upon us, there were cameras. In order to take a picture, a good one to be more precise, it was required to have a good knowledge of the complicated camera functions. But once the smartphones arrived in our lives, they took away the need to capture the beautiful moments of life in the cameras. Still clicking good pictures from your smartphone is not everyone’s cup of tea. You need to be a pro at it!!

Below are a few tips that could come in handy if you want to be one of those smartphone photographers.

Use Grid lines- One of easiest ways to get perfectly balanced shot is to use the grid options effectively. The grid lines form 9 little boxes on the screen and you need to balance them effectively using the ‘rule of thirds’, usually used in the professional photography. If you place the points of interests within the boxes, the image will be better to look at and well balanced.

Focus on one subject- Usually; the photographs taken from the phone have just one subject that you want to click. Take some time in balancing the focus on that particular subject and keep a sharp focus on that point until you press the capture button.

Editing- Editing is necessary. More often than not, the framing gets weird and you end up including some things in your photo unintentionally. Use the editor effectively in order to crop out the unwanted portion of the picture or to give the clicked image a sharper edge.

Love the negative space- The negative space in a picture is that particular area that doesn’t serve any special purpose to the image, such as a clear sky in the background, or a wide landscape. However, using a negative space effectively can make the image look professional of the highest degree.

Play with angles- Playing with the different point of views can be a lot of fun and it can give your image a distinct edge. As most of the images taken from a smartphone are either straight angled or bird’s view, using some unexpected angle can be a great display of your talent as a photographer. However, in case you have gone quite overboard with that one, there always are the ways to fix that in the edit.

Reflections- There is something artistic about including reflections in your photograph. Just make your subject stand on the bank of a lake and click a well-balanced photograph equally giving enough space in the final image to the real subject and the reflection. You will know what it can do to your image.

Color blocking- How great it looks when the entire image is in black and white except for one object. Although this could only be done during the editing, but the effect is extremely crazy looking and gives your photograph a wicked but beautiful charm.

The journey to become a smartphone photographer is long but worth it!

2017 brings long weekends for travel enthusiasts. Here’s how you should plan them

2017 is already here. It is always advisable to plan to travel long before for the upcoming extended weekends.  Here are we, to make the job a teeny bit easier for you.

Republic day weekend

A drool-worthy 4 day weekend is here starting from 26th January-29th Jan. The ideal place we have managed to find over that period of time would be skiing on the slopes of Auli, which turns out to be a sort of winter heaven in the month of January.

Mahashivratri Weekend

During the Shivratri weekend, which would begin on 24th February and extend until 26th February, you must head to Goa. The Goa carnival would be awaiting you. It was started by the Portuguese in 1500’s and celebrated with wild enthusiasm and energy even today. You may opt to stay at cidade de goa for the ease of enjoying the carnival.

The snow-clad highs of Gulmarg in Kashmir would also welcome you as the beautiful white snow does a fine job of justifying why it is called as the Heaven on Earth.

Holi Weekend

On 11th, 12th, and 13th March, Holi weekend would be here. So immerse yourself in the festive colors and head to Vrindavan. The town and the places surrounding it are known to celebrate the festival with a wildness that is rare to see anywhere else in the country.

Hat trick weekend

From April 13th to 16th, it’s 4 days long holiday time and during that period of time, the Phuket biking week is taking place. So, the bikers know where to head to and for others as well, Phuket is one place that demands to be visited at least once. There is no perfect time for doing so. Mapro Strawberry festival at Mahabaleshwar could also be a good stop.

Eid Weekend

From 23rd June to 26th June, the country will be celebrating Eid, so head to Hyderabad or Lucknow to truly enjoy the festival of Ramadan. The Mughlai food served at that place during the festival is just crazy.

A brief trip to Ladakh could also be a great option for little more adventurous ones.

The August Holiday

From 12th to 20th August, the country will celebrate one of the longest holidays sprees in years. Take a trek to Har Ki Dun, known as the place where the Pandavas made their ascent to heaven after living long and eventful lives. The valley dates back 3000 years and offers a lot to savor.

Diwali Weekend

Starting from 14th to 22nd October, a 9 day holiday awaits you. During the Diwali weekend, most of you would prefer to stay at home with their family. But just in case you wanted an outing, the mesmerizing Kangra Valley awaits you with open arms.

And then there is Pushkar, and being a Hindu Pilgrimage, the Diwali celebrations here are off the charts.

Id-e-Milad Weekend

The next year, Id-e-Milad will be observed on 1st Dec. It’s a gazetted holiday and will be followed by a weekend.

This is the time when the ten days long Hornbill Festival gets underway in Nagaland. The festival is celebrated with enthusiasm and zeal by the locals there. This festival should be on your must-visit list especially if music captures your senses. The peak of the winter season is the time when bird sanctuaries in mainlands are home to thousands of rare and beautiful migratory birds. Keoladeo National Park in Bharatpur is a great place for bird watching.

Christmas

The Christmas holiday begins from December 23rd which happens to be Saturday and extends till December 25th, Monday, when Christmas Eve is observed.
