Triund Valley- A trek for beginners in Mcleodganj

Located at a distance of about 9 km from McLeod Ganj in Himachal Pradesh, the Triund Valley has been drawing crowds for its amazing trek. The easy to moderate hike is suitable not only for experts but also for those who are willing to set the ball rolling in the astounding sport. It is a perfect weekend getaway to refresh one’s mind and get going with the monotonous schedule of the next week.

McLeod Ganj, often called as ‘Little Lhasa’ is a lively and colourful suburb of Dharamshala where it feels like actually being in Tibet. It is a 9 km walk from here to Triund hilltop.  There are two routes which one can take. One of them is via Galu Temple while the other is through Bhagsu. The former one is easier in terms of steepness and terrain. After registering oneself at the Police Check Point near Galu Temple – the last point till where going by cars is feasible – no other option but going on foot remains.

For amateurs, it is recommended that they start early so that they reach the hilltop before it gets dark. Otherwise, for experienced trekkers, it is only a 2-3 hours journey. Due to the brief stretch, it is possible for one to go uphill and return also on the same day but it is always advisable to spend the night on the hilltop only so as to cherish the night sky view. It is also suggested to carry ample food and water from downhill only as the prices of every item goes on increasing by leaps and bounds with increasing altitude. Other than these, only essential items must be carried as unnecessary baggage slows down speed.

As one crosses the Registration Point, the calmness and wilderness of the place start taking in. The initial peregrination is very easy and one can enjoy the beautiful view of the adjoining hills. The fresh air of the mountains energises the people while the desire to get closer to nature incentivizes them to carry on.

The first refreshment counter comes after about 2 km of the trek from the Galu temple, where there is a Momos Point. One can relish them with the peculiar homemade sauce that they are served with. Also, let there be some space for a hot cup of tea or noodles which are available at cafés that come later on in the trail.

The ascend’s difficulty level increases a little after the Momos Point. One might find wild goats and cows on the way. The second halting point is usually the Magic View café where one can refill their water bottles and eat something before going further. The real escalation starts after this café and the last 2 km of the trek test one’s patience and energy. But at the end, they are all worth it.

On reaching the hilltop one gets mesmerised by the breathtaking scenery. The lofty Dhauladhar Range can be seen from here and the snow covered peaks are a treat to the eyes. There is Forest Department guest house where one can seek accommodation for the night only if the advance booking has been done but pitching a tent is highly recommended to make the trip more thrilling. After adoring the splendid sunset, one is captivated by the beautiful clear sky full of twinkling stars. It is a Photographer’s paradise!

The next morning one can tread to the Snowline Café which at a distance of 2 km from the hilltop and consequently begins the return journey. Going downhill is relatively easier that climbing, so it does not take much time to reach the Registration Point. After resting for a while in McLeod Ganj, one can head backwards as the weekend comes to a close.

Adventure, tranquillity, peace, nature’s beauty and an experience of a time- if one wants it all at one place under time constraints, a trek to Triund is an unparalleled idea!

Medar Tribe- Bamboo Artisans from Dandeli

In the north west of Karnataka, during my quest to explore the unexplored, I happen to meet Medar Tribals in Dandeli. These tribals are craftsmen who earn their living by selling items made up of bamboo. These includes beautiful jewelry pieces to diyas to baskets which can be used for multiple things.

Families are very good hosts and religious. The folks were way too hospitable.  Most of them have dedicated puja rooms and they worship god for the community well-being. Community always remain united and usually travels in groups.

As more and more trees are being cut down, community is finding it difficult to sustain their mode of living. Though government has taken initial steps to settle them down and providing them suitable jobs, but it seems community members are not very happy as they still want to continue with the traditions.

Am glad to experience rich traditions of India on my exploration.

It is the home for several endangered flora & fauna and is bird watcher’s paradise.Let this photo essay drive inspire you for your next trip to Great Himalayan National Park.

Several locals, shepherds can be seen inside the park with their cattle.

Must Do’s at Tawang

Located in Arunachal Pradesh, Tawang is one of the most picturesque places in north-east. What makes is more beautiful is the variety of scenic landscapes you get to witness during your journey. Color, landscape changes with every curve.  From Bright yellow mustard fields merging with orchids that suddenly morph into dense forests and then to snow clad mountains. “Journeys are more important than destination”- this holds true for road trip to Tawang. Surrounded by Tibet to its north, Sela range of West Kameng to the east and Bhutan in the southwest direction in itself makes it a surreal place. Though you will be rewarded by stunning waterfalls, mesmerizing valleys, here is my quick Must-visits, while you in Tawang.

Sela Pass

Situated at the height of 13,714 ft above mean sea level, Sela pass connects Tawang to Tezpur and Guwahati and one of the highest motorable pass in the world. On the way to Sela pass is Paradise Lake. While summers at Sela Pass are not very cold, but temperature goes to as low as -10 degree in winters. The place is rightly called as “heaven on earth” due to its breathtaking views.

Tawang Monastery

As the birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama, Tawang boasts of being the holy site for Tibetan Buddhists and a prominent center for Gelug or Gelugpa, the pre-eminent Buddhist school in Tibet. This monastery is the 2nd largest in Asia & largest in Asia, and one of the oldest monasteries as well. It is also known as Golden Namgyal Lhatse . The story behind the monastery is interesting. It is believed that Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso, could not find a suitable place for monastery, so he decided to pray for guidance. When he opened his eyes, he found his horse was on the top of hill, where present day monastery is there. It is the main venue of Torgva festival. Several manuscripts, religious books can be found in the place.

Gorichen Peak

Located at a distance of 160 Kms of Tawang, this peak has religious sentiments attached to it. It is also known as Sa-Nga Phu, which literally means the Kingdom of Deity, and is assumed that it protects the place from evils. Place is hikers’ paradise. The entire trek journey is amazing and adventurous. Once you are at the peak, the entire journey seems worth because of the splendid views.

Shonga-tser Lake

Alternatively known as Madhuri Lake, is located at a distance of 40Kms from Tawang. It is the best example of how nature changes the landscapes. It is the resultant of a massive earthquake, which was otherwise grassland for local cattle. Lake is highly photogenic and boasts of being photographer’s delight. Stroll around the lake is indeed soulful and enticing.

Nuranang Waterfalls

Located 40 Kms away from Tawang, this is another spectacular waterfall, which you will not like to miss. Known as Jang falls, due to its proximity to Jang, small township between Tawang & Bomdila..There is a Hydel power station nearby, which can be visited. River Rafting can be done in summers. For SRK fans, this is the place where Koyala was shot.

Pankang Teng Tso Lake

Surrounded by the Himalayas, Pankang Teng Tso Lake, also called as Ptso Lake is situated 17 km from Tawang. It’s all about the nature that speaks at the lake. It is frozen almost half of the year and is good ground for skiing. Calm water, moving clouds, grazing animals, all look like scenery which can be painted only in mind. Place is highly recommended for all nature shooters.

Jaswant Garh

Built in the memory of Paramvir Chakra recipient Jaswant Singh, it is a must visit place. It is believed, he still protects the Indo-China border. Apparently, he fought for 72 hrs alone during Indo-China war in 1962 and is duly respected within Indian and Chinese army fraternity.

Tawang is one place, which will always refresh you from the city buzz and offers the nature at its best. This summer, don’t wait!! Just pack your bags and go to Tawang.

A Foodie evening at Ocean Deck Resort

During my recent trips to Karwar, I got to experience the amazing home stay at Ocean Deck Resort. It is a beautiful island that truly depicts home away from home. Though due to lack of time, I thought to drop the idea of going there, but after hearing so much about the place, I went, and must say, my food journey would have been incomplete, if I wouldn’t have come there. What makes this place more unique and offers comfortable stay is bcoz to its owner Mr.Vinay, who is always energized and ensures the best stay for his customers. Review here is based on my stay, food and definitely quick conversations with the people staying. The place is easily accessible with Dabolim airport at a distance of 100Kms. Pick & Drop can be arranged on request. Here are highlights of the place as experienced by me.
1) If you want to experience a homestay in Karwar, this is the place you would want to be. Listed in lonely planet, for its amazing location and hospitality, this place is always the top choice for repeat guests at Karwar.
2) Since the homestay is just 5 Kms away from Karwar Museum , Devbagh beach and 60 Km away from Gokarna Beach, there are ample places to roam around, if you have a weekend in hand and you are eager to explore the in and around the place.

3) If you are foodie, nothing can beat them in Karwar. I happen to eat vegetarian variants, which I have never heard of. Be it Karela chakri or fried bhindis, everything has its own charm. Lime water was super with perfect blend of lemon and sugar to quench your thirst. I wish I could pack some. Sea-food is good and place is heaven for sea-food lovers. During your stay, you can do fishing and can get the same for dinner. Apparently, all you need is to order for the fish you would like to eat and you can have the same in your scrumptious meal.

4) The place is run by the Mr.Vinay who acts as host, chef, and waiter. He stays there itself and ensures that all his guests are being taken care of properly. This is what makes the place all the more experiential and your stay more memorable.

5) The place provides plethora of activities wherein you can indulge yourself. They include Machine boat ride, beach trekking, Kayaking, wooden boat ride, river crossing, fishing.

6) Free access to Wi-fi. You can remain connected to your folks all the time and can share live updates while making them jealous

7) The place is completely in the lap of nature, with a beautiful setting. Backwaters and Devbagh beach make the place more serene and photogenic.

8) Accommodation ranges from suites to fishermen’s room. They are well-furnished with all basic amenities in them.

9) Campfires are arranged every evening upon nightfall and are a great way to relax and soak yourself in the lap of nature.

10) It is indeed value for money, that gives you the opportunity to get lost in nature.
Being a nature lover and foodie together, this place is surely my personal recommendation to those who are looking for an escape from the city buzz.
What are you waiting for? Plan your upcoming weekend to Karwar and get your bookings from Ocean Deck or call Mr. Vinay at +91-9342994358 or write to them at bookings@oceandeck.org

Getting Lost in wilderness of Pashangarh Taj Safaris.

Pashangarh wilderness lodge is located in Pashan Garh, adjacent to the Panna National Park and is a beautiful rugged property of Taj Safaris. . It is mere 50 km from Khajuraho, a famous World Heritage Site along the river Ken. It comprises of 12 cottages of stone cottage( as Pashan means stone)

The lobby celebrates Haveli design, with a spacious central courtyard. The interiors are contemporary mix of chocolate linens, block-printed black silks, celadon cottons and cotton lace chandeliers.

All suites have private veranda machaans, luxurious bathrooms with huge central showers, seperate wc, twin hand basins.  The overall design is stony and rough, with white marble, leather, ebony and chocolate highlights. Highlight is, there are no TVs in the property. When asked, I was told, we want people enjoy the beauty rather than getting indulged in TV. The interiors make for a bold statement in luxury and stone walls reduce to buttresses at the corner where two squares intersect, leaving behind glass, jaali latisse, mosquitoes screens and sliding doors. Every small item is room is well crafted and thought through. Staff is very courteous and available for the guests.

Dining

Dining in Pashan Garh is an experience in itself, not only with the vividity of menu but also in the presentation. Dining experience is also the highlight of the place. Lunch was served to us in the nearby rural settings in bitten silver cutlery. However, poolside lunch is also available. Care is taken for each and every guest separately to make sure, they have Wow experience.

What I enjoyed most was the lakeside bullock cart dinner, which not only gave us privacy but also complete freedom to gaze the stars as we had our dinner. Other option available is dinners on the deck. The presentation of breakfast next morning added to our experience.

Highly recommended property if you are traveling to Khajuraho,  if you plan to get lost in the wilderness for few days.
